OP, rebuild or replace the shift tower. It's easy, and shouldn't be very expensive. The transmission is most likely perfectly fine.

Well it could be the tower. Op u said it “hit metal”? If you hear a bang when the shifter gets kicked out, then that’s a problem. If you hear a bang when you put it in gear after it’s been kicked out, that’s a bigger problem. I’m curious, when you accelerate does the shifter stay or does it get kicked out. Go take it to the Mexicans in Chicago, they’ll do a rebuild in 1 day. -

I don’t know what “cowboy style “ shifting is but, I always float shift. It’s not jerking the shifter but a steady slow move of the stick into the next gear as the RPM drops.
