Does everyone have to drive in the daylight hours and park as soon as the sun even looks like it's going to set? I know that many people have their reasons, such as poor eyesight at night, hours of service restrictions, and scheduling. But does EVERYONE have to park as soon as it gets dark?

I'm usually the idiot that had to park somewhere stupid around midnight because there is never any parking anywhere at any truckstop or rest area, only to wake up and see that everyone is gone, and my truck is somewhere in the parking lot where it looks like it doesn't belong.

Someone else has had to experience this, right? It even gets worse when winter solstice hits (from my personal point of view, no facts here!)

    probably has a few reasons..........

one being, that east of the miss river, parking is incredibly tight. try and be late coming (for instance) up I-95 on the east, for a delivery in the AM, and not hunker down before 4 PM.......!!!!!! you'll almost never find a spot to park at rest areas, service plaza's, truck stops.

west of the miss river, things open up (usually) nicely for parking..........but i too have had parking issues out west of the miss river.

see reason above, and stop doing this...........

just wait till you're driving the Mass Pike, or the NJTP and they shut those down. try finding parking when just the word alone on any AM radio station brings people of the road and clutter up parking spaces, or force one to drive the secondary roads.....

ah yes.............parking spaces, and the lack of them............always a truckers problem.

Run at night... no traffic, no bears, scales closed. Lotsa parking around 0800!

Hmmm... some yutz decides to take their trailer over the front of your tractor and its not in a marked space... that's a preventable on you.

YOU need to get creative with parking. WalMart, empty parking lots, wide spaces at the roadside, industrial access roads. YOU need to keep an eye out for potential parking spots near your shippers and receivers. This is especially true up in the NE.

Hubby always calls the shipper/receiver up ahead of time, to see if they have over-night parking available, especially when we are up in the NE, as someone else has said.

If they do, we will park there. If not, he has to plan his timing accordingly, in order to find parking. And, sometimes, that DOES mean, getting a spot at the TS at 4PM. Of course, we can then spend time doing neccessary things like laundry, showering, cleaning the truck, etc.

Hubby runs CO to east coast, going to NY, ME, MA, CT etc you better get parked by 4 or your outta luck for sure. He drives during the day because thats when he can deliver, not many dealerships open after 5 or 6 pm.

There is an AWESOME site that will help you locate a truck stop in any state its called truckstopinfo.com and it does HELP a lot to find those little outta the way places.

Yep! Hubby is lucky enough that he is like an elephant....he doesn't forget ANY PLACE where he can park!! If he hasn't been to a particular place before, like I said, he'll call ahead.

And with my handy-dandy laptop, I can get online, and search for malls, grocery stores, Super-Targets, and even..**sigh** Wal * Marts, that allow over night parking, if we can't find a spot at a TS.

I will caution about this though...when calling these malls, grocery stores, etc., do NOT just ask if they allow big truck parking...you must also ask if there is a city/town/township ordinance that allows you to park there. As sometimes, the STORE will allow it, but legal ordinances don't, and it can get your truck towed.

Same here.... always park early off the beaten path so I don't have to fight the crowds. You just can't get anything after dark and I pull hazmat..... lots o folks don't want me around. Something about those colored diamonds on my trailer.

I think the 14 hour rule has a lot to do with it: most deliveries are set for early morning, so everyone gets up around the same time, and that, of course, means that everyone has to go to bed around the same time.

Before elogs, I could fudge the 14, but now, no way. :biggrin_25513:
