Mattawan I-94

Early Friday morning 2/23/07, I-94 westbound at Mattawan, MI, was shut down due to a truck fire. Celeste Solomon had passed the Mattawan exit in the semi she was driving and had to stop on the highway for the other truck's fire. The entrance ramp at Mattawan was closed by police. About that time, police received a report of a disturbance at the Speedway Gas Station near the Mattawan exit. Store clerks had asked some people to leave. It is believed that those same people sped past the police who were blocking the entrance ramp. They sped onto the highway and eventually slammed into Celeste Solomon's stopped semi. A 27-year-old man was killed, and the 21-year-old woman driver of the car was hospitalized. Neither was wearing a seat belt, and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash which happened just before 1:00 a.m.
