Wussup guys, I’ve been dragging a sled cor about 5 years but really never got past Georgia,SC,NC and Virginia doing mostly local moves.

Im buying my own outfit and am in the process of eating everything up. And I read somewhere that I need to register in each state for maximum weight or some states wont issue a permit for OW. Could some of y’all with more experience enlightenment me on this and where I need to do it?
Since it’ll be all on me I may take some multi state moves and wanna be prepared.

Would be on your IRP. Pretty much standard for whoever does your licensing to just go 80,000lbs everywhere. That 80,000lbs max gross really only applies to the Interstate System. A lot of states have maximums higher than that. The states start issuing permits based on the truck already being licenced for max weight in that jurisdiction. If you want a permit for 120,000gross, you’re licenced for 80,000gross but that states maximum is 105,000 they won’t have a way to permit you for the portion between 80,000 and 105,000.

    this is not correct.

IA,MN SD,OK will require you to have the weight you wish to permit for on your IRP cab card.

IA won’t issue otherwise but MN will issue but your permit won’t be valid.

there are other states like WY,OR,WA, LA that you can register for more but if you aren’t they will still sell you a permit and charge you for reg.

@Rontonio had it correct. Its the registration weight on your cab card. Just register for the max weight allowed in those states..... I dont have a list of states cause I dont feel like pulling my cab card out LOL

    Thanks for the information.
So the only states I need to worry about IRP max weight would be IA,MN,SD & OK all the others I can just file for a single trip permit?

    cke Thanks this.

Things have changed a since I moved anything large down there. You don’t need 6 licence plates and two acres of fuel decals on the side of the truck anymore either. Our regs are still a little messed up but we only have 12 jurisdictions to sort out. And our weights are way different. Permitting isn’t as much of a headache for our low beds and double drops when the trucks are registered for 8 axles and 140,000lbs to start with for the trains. Generally we’re only permitting for dimension. If I have to permit weight for more than a couple thousand on an axle somewhere, then it’s an engineer approved permit and jeeps and boosters are out.

Yep. Got a ticket for 18000lbs over because I crossed a scale with a permit, but not enough weight on my registration in Minnesota.

A max weight tag only adds a few hundred to the cost.

It is well worth doing the research to register for the maximum you can in the area you work in, because the fines that can be incurred from one state can be multiples of the fees you pay.
The delays to update your registrations and cabcards so that you can permit your load can also be darn expensive.

D.Tibbitt, cke and Phoenix Heavy Haul Thank this.
