I’ve found a good mechanical N14 core. It’s from a truck, so no JWAC. I say that, cause nearly all the mechanical N14’s in my area were in CIH Steiger and were all water to air. Anyway, Interstate McBee has a N14 CPL listing and some listings are STC, which is the mechanicals. Are any of these listings, mechanical N14’s I’m missing? I want to see what the cam and injector numbers correspond with?

Not exactly following the question but all stc engines will be mechanical style and (in my limited experience) any high horse ones that aren’t stc will be stationary type engines that are basically intended to run a constant rpm
As far as how much power one can make in a daily driven truck I probably wouldn’t want to cross 600 and only for certain drivers
there used to be 2 fl classics around here with mechanical n14s that would smoke about anything else from the quarry….the owner is mostly retired and can be a bit of a donkey butt sometimes but on the off chance I run across him on the right day I will see what I can learn
Not sure on your intentions but Cummins seems to be losing interest in those engines very quickly
@OLDSKOOLERnWV can probably add some information to this thread

The STC system was problematic. More so in higher horsepower engines. I would steer clear of them.

The ones I worked on would come in complaining about a miss under light load and heavy fuel smoke. The STC tappet in the injector had failed so pull the manifold and see which injector was making the smoke and replace it. The other complaint was running rough or missing under load. The barrel inside the injector would split or score causing the problem. It was harder to tell which one was the problem. A lot of times it meant replacing all six injectors. I could not tell you how many injectors I replaced, a lot.

Naw, I’m not wanting to get crazy with it but was wondering if 500hp was doable with a mechanical(STC) cam and timing? I’m sure there’s other applications but a CaseIH 9390 4wd articulated tractor was around ~425hp, with that same engine. Of course it was water to air and timing would be different than a truck application. Higher hp from a genset or marine? I’ve practically had this engine given to me so I was just asking the brain trust before I get any more stupid ideas and follow through with them.

I’ve heard that they weren’t as simple and on occasion, not as reliable as the PT pump but the tractors they put them in seem to held up great and were the best 4wd’s in there day.

Get the serial number off the block below #6 head gasket on the left side. A call to the local Cummins dealer should give you the CPL number and HP it’s originally set at. You’ll have a good starting point then knowing what the internals are as far as pistons and camshaft….
