Is a mentor the same as a trainer? My first thought like most would be patience to be aware that the person is new to driving heavy vehicles, and does not have the same knowledge as an experienced driver that is the primary reason they are with you so you can teach them. Each person is different so not everyone learns at the same speed you would of noticed this when you first went to school, again patience will help here. Teach them not just how to be a driver but how to be a defensive driver, always on the lookout for traffic incidents can prevent the huge pile ups we often encounter on freeways because people are not on the lookout for incidents ahead of them on the highway. Teach them how to drive to the conditions, if the official speed limit is 70 mph keep in mind this is for ideal conditions and they should slow down accordingly again something that often contributes to the massive pile ups drivers not slowing down for the conditions. How to go down a mountain range in the right gear, how to slow down without jackknifing the trailer. How to properly hook up to the fifth wheel. How to do a vehicle inspection, how to turn at an intersection without taking out the light posts. How to change up or down gears. And finally how to manage fatigue.

3years driving a truck, what could you possibly teach ? It’s like the truck driving schools, 6 -7 weeks, turn em loose, there professional truck drivers now . Stupid! In the wonder every day there’s truck wrecks. What’s the first thing a truck driving school teachs you? How to sit in the seat, with your knee against the window , wearing flip flops.
