I just ripped off my whole mudflap bracket. From what I can tell, I don't need a mudflap if I'm pulling a trailer. But I was reading my green book, and it looks like I do need the bracket, because I need the reflective tape. Is that right? Look at the pic and tell me if I'm legal as it is, and I'll just run it until I get home.

Huh interesting, when I pull a certain trailer it hits my mud flap so I pull the pin and remove them. Thought it was legal and have passed an inspection that way. Will be watching this to see the actual regs.

Looking into this myself a while ago this is the best information I could find. My take on this is that, except for the reflective strip or lights, mudflap laws are state level. And that generally you ARE required to have them on your tractor (i.e. on a tandem axle or other heavy vehicle).

I'm in CA according to that if the trailer is blocking the spray of mud or water then it should be good here. Of course like always it is up to interpretationDave_in_AZ, Rideandrepair, Bean Jr. and 1 other person Thank this.

You should be good til you deliver or get to the yard as long as it’s written up. Get away with a lot of sins if there’s ink all over the pretrip.beastr123, InTooDeep, Rideandrepair and 3 others Thank this.

My understanding is the mudflap is to keep the rocks from hitting cars. Among other things.
The trailer doesn't stop that unless it has a mudflap of its own.
You still need a mudflap. Either trailer or truck.
My truck has quarter fender in front. Flap in rear of tire and trailer has one behind the truck flap. It's far enough behind it doesn't hit anything.
That's my understanding. I don't know about the regs.
As far as the brackets. Mine are the 1/2 inch square bar type. With coils by the frame. No tape.Last edited: Mar 28, 2022

I don’t think you need a bracket. I’ve run these for years and only put the mud-flaps on when bobtailing and have never had an issue.

I'm not going home for awhile, so if it's legal, I'll run it until then. If not, I'll go buy a bracket somewhere. But I don't want to bother with it until I get home, if I can avoid it.Flat Earth Trucker, InTooDeep and Rideandrepair Thank this.

I already reinstalled it with baling wire and gorilla tape.
