I changed oil temp sensor couple days ago and terminal connection today. Connector was bad. The clip that holds wire in place was broke.

The cel was coming on and off randomly. Road relay showed sporadic reading from 0 to 20 degrees then up to running temperature the same as mechanical gauge.now it only reads 0 temp for oil temperature.

Today I changed sensor and wire harness end.
I don't have any power (5vdc,) to the oil temperature sensor. Also no power to the manifold air pressure sensor.

This is where my inexperience shows.
I checked pin 11 in the "A" harness, no power. While disconnected from ecm.

Also checked the circuit for continuity. Multimeter on ohms. Red probe in 11hole, black probe end on harness connection for sensor. Needle did not move.

Both fuses in harness by batteries are good.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I see I checked wrong pin in the "A" harness. If I read the wiring diagram correctly. Pin 12 and pin 2 should have 5vdc.
Is the 5vdc reading from the ecm on pin 12 and 2 in the "A" harness taken while key on, in the ecm

Yes. Key on/engine off (KOEO for those who always wondered what that abbreviation meant) 5V comes from ECM to sensors, so harness must be plugged in to ECM and test for "5V output" at sensor pugs. If I read above correctly, you do not have continuity thru harness between sensor plug and ECM , hence a break in harness.

    xsetra Thanks this.

I used wrong pin testing yesterday.

If I don't have 5v output from ecm.
    Will the ecm stop working.
I am loaded and deliver tomorrow.

I've read that this oil temp sensor will not make ecm red light/shut off engine.

    With a better attitude today.
Upon further testing. And breaking another terminal end clip. Time to replace with a new sensor harness, me thinks.

The other sensors do have 5 vdc. Now splicing the power feed to oil temp sensor.
Can I jump from manifold air temperature sensor to the oil temperature sensor?

Rather than dig into the wire harness and risk breaking some other wire/connection.
Logic tells me yes.BUT I don't have much experience with the wiring of this 99 Freightliner. I've been incredibly lucky.

Yes you can. You are doing great. You have the perfect truck/engine to be a beginner electrical troubleshooter on. Just think that when you "graduate" you can start fixing all of the multiplexed and j1939 data link issues when some of us (HeavyD,Nasriza,Mhyn, etc. sorry too many to name) retire!

    xsetra Thanks this.

Yes I appreciate the responses from all the members mentioned and those not mentioned.
I was very concerned about toasting my ecm, back feeding a wire.
I have a reading of 20 degrees oil temperature with old wire still hooked up.

I spliced into the coolant temperature sensor but didn't splice into The oil temperature sensor, yet.

I will order a new sensor harness Monday.
My goal is to retire with this truck, so hopefully no graduating for me.
    Thanks for your help.
