I was recently let go from Swift Transportation. I had been driving OTR for 9 months. I was trained on dry van but placed on reefer as soon as I went solo. The learning curve was steep and I made several mistakes. I had always been told that if one was out of time leaving a receiver, one could leave their QUALCOMM status on sleeper and 'creep' to get to a safe area for a reset. Unfortunately I did not know how to do this properly & ended up in violation a few times. Only after Swift safety contacted me was I informed of the correct way to handle that situation. I also had 4 accidents during this period, 3 of with Swift considered preventable. The first was a collision with a deer That cracked the trucks oil cooler and required a tow. That was NOT considered one of the preventable accidents or so Swift told me. The others were; First a left turn out of a narrow alley required driving a little ways up onto a grassy road shoulder. It was dark and there was either a hole hidden in the grass or a sewer line that collapsed under the trucks weight. Couldn't stop there because of traffic so I never knew exactly what the hole was. The right front steer tire went into and bounced out of the hole. This brought the fender in contact with the ground and torn the right quarter of the plastic fender off. Second, I was at a receiver waiting for a door to unload in. I had trucks on either side of me also waiting. The lot was small and there was limited room to pull forward out of the waiting area. When they assigned me a door I pulled forward swinging just a little to the left to make my right hand turn out of the parking area. It was 1/2 an inch to much. as I turned the trailer swiveled on its tandems and one of the hingeds on the back of my trailer came onto contact with the edge of the mirror of the driver who had been parked to my left. It put a crack in the lower mirror and tore the backing off. Third, I turned down a what ended up being a dead end road, looking for my destination. Upon reaching the end of that road & realizing I had gone the wrong way I had to try and get turned around. There was a waste water treatment plant to my right and I thought I might be able to jackknife the trailer into their driveway to do a 3 point turn. When I got out to look I noticed a fair bit of activity at the plant, people coming and going out of the driveway that led to their lot. On my right was a low shoulder with pine trees along the road. from my perspective I failed to notice a low metal sign on a steel post on the edge of the road reading 'Keep off the grass'. I proceeded to back up concentrating mainly on the traffic in and out of the 2 lane driveway. I ended up partially on the shoulder and backed over the sign which cut my brake line. Repair had to be called out so I could release my brakes, complete my turn and continue. A few weeks later Swift let me go. With those things on my record what are my chances of getting another trucking job? Being an OTR in the first job I have ever truly enjoyed. When I started I felt woefully unprepared, there were so many things that Swift failed to teach me. I was finally reaching the point were I was beginning to feel competent in my duties. I have learned from the mistakes that I made and believe it unlikely to make those same mistakes again. What companies are most likely to give me another shot at this career path?

If Chinatown only has Carolina Cargo for you, good luck. You're going to need it. Not that CC is bad (I have no idea). Just that Chinatown can usually give drivers a pretty good list of companies to look into.

Sometimes we humans need to step back and re-examine a career choice. Not everybody is cut out to be a trucker. Honestly I don't think you are. You speak of a 2nd chance. You were given a 2nd chance by Swift. Almost everyday truck drivers both local and OTR must make critical decisions about space and space management. You have a history of mismanaging space. If I were responsible for the hiring and saw your application I would stamp it unhireable. You might be able to get a job driving a dump truck or garbage truck, but I doubt it. You are a low time driver with an excessive amount of accidents. Chances are you will not find a job in this industry and if you do trust me its probably your last chance. Do yourself a favor be man enough to admit your not trucker material and find another career. I do wish you good luck though.

Swift reports to DAC (or HireRight...whatever they go by these days) and any accidents like that will be on your DAC report at some point. Since pretty much all large carriers utilize DAC, your chances of being hired by another large carrier are fairly slim.

However, there are still plenty of companies that do not use DAC and your incidents, unless reported on your motor vehicle record, won't come to light unless you tell the prospective employer. I worked for Swift about 8 years ago as my first job out of CDL school. I managed to stay with them until the 4th week of my 6 week training and then I decided that OTR wasn't for me. Since then, I've utilized Craigslist or other resources (Monster, Indeed, local newspaper, etc.) to find open positions and have been hired by reputable companies. I worked at Pepsi as a delivery driver after Swift and worked there for a year and a half. Found that position through Monster. After that, I got a job at a local construction company driving their fuel truck and I stayed there for about 2 and a half years and I found that one through Craigslist. Finally, the last job I worked at for 4 years was a regional equipment chain where I was a delivery driver. Found that one through Indeed.

None of those companies, with the exception of Swift, use DAC and they all paid well and had decent benefit packages as well. As a bonus, I was local and was always home at night and on the weekends. If you are dead set on being a driver, there are options available to you other than the "mega companies" but they are sometimes harder to find and generally require a bare minimum of 6 months experience.

My advice would be to ask for a copy of your DAC report:
    http://www.hireright.com/background...ng-a-free-copy-of-your-background-report-file

I got mine about 2 weeks after requesting it...I just wanted to see what information it had. Mine only showed the 4 week stint with Swift back in 2007. Anyway, once you know what's on your report, you can make better informed decisions as to your next course of action.

    Quit running into ####.

    Jeez.

It's off to hauling grain for you! Very hard to hit something when there's nothing for miles.

Plus if you pull doubles, no one expects you to back anywhere.

But if you ever #### up on a dead end with doubles, god ####ing help you.

I have heard that TransAm is a second chance company. I know they only require for school grads 120 hour course which is below industry standards.. I have also heard that they overlook minor incidents with existing drivers which were not reported incidents according to another thread on here from former Transam driver.

These are all companies that give terrible drivers a second chance. Please narrow your search here.

DAC is not the main complicating factor. Its that termination by Swift. A company is going to want to know why even if they are not a DAC company. You are obligated by law to provide as much employment history you can up to ten years. You will need to tell them the reason for the job action and when they see those three preventables most likely your toast. Or you could elect to not tell the company and start praying they don't contact Swift. The chances of that are slim.
