I'm asking , all of you.!! I live in California, inland Empire area. How does one go about learning to work ,flatbed? I'm determined, have 4 years otr, 53' dry van, 10/13 speed, and have the ability. So where does a woman go to that will train her ? Thank you.

If you have a clean record call Smokey Point distributing. We have a yard in pamona. We are not exactly a training company but we do take experienced drivers with no flatbed experience. We put them with a driver on the i5 corridor for a month and show them the basics.

A bit about Spd. We run all 48 and Canada if you want to. We are an LTL open deck company. Our bread and butter is Aerospace industry from finished parts to raw materials. We also haul elevators, Cnc machines, pizza ovens, and anything else that will fit on a trailer. We have a very diverse trailer pool from regular flats to stretch rgns and purposes built wing trailers. Lots of quick draw type trailers too.

We offer mileage or salary pay. Just last week they upped the base salary pay from 54 to 64k a year for a first year solo.

As for female flatbed drivers that’s no issue here. We have several including our driver of the year last year.

  7. @Rocketfire also if your on the road, don't be afraid to ask an open deck, oversized or step deck questions. look for old school guys. We still hold on to the standards of opendeck.

look into the flatbed section of the site,. we have a picture section of loads. see how the straps and chains look on loads. take pictures of your loads when your running.

@MACK E-6 can point to a few forums that may help.

As a Flatbed owner I'd rather have a driver ask questions then wing it.

    biggest thing you should know.

You can never throw to much securement.

stwik, MACK E-6 and LoneCowboy Thank this.

A good place to start before getting a job is to familiarize yourself with the FMSCR 393.100 section on cargo securement. J. J. Keller offers a great handbook that expands on the basic rules and gives a good overview of the most common types of cargo transported on a flatdeck.
