So I have a back issue that I'm dealing with right now. Dr told me today that flatbeddin is no more for me! He said I would be fine "just driving". Coming from flatbeddin and willing to run anywhere to make the best money how resonable is it to find a job with 100% no touch or drop n hook?

I know I'm pressing the edge asking this type of question, but I figured I would ask it. I put my resume up on one of the large job sites and awaiting any replies there.

I have a year of otr flatbed, and 2 years of auto transport/flatbed/dump trailer work that is totally verifiable. My license is clean, clean dac, never fail/refuse a drug test and a twic card.

What is the best way to approach this situation? Do I tell the companies I call that I have this problem and need something to my liking or keep it quiet and hope for the best? I don't want to lie, but I don't want to have the phone hung up on my either. Are there any companies out there who actually offer 100% no touch freight, or soley drop n hook? I can handle the everyday life trucking, but don't want to take the chance of having to load floor loads on pallets or soemthing the like. I should be ok using a pallet jack. My other concern is I only have flatbed and auto transport experience, will anyone actually hire me being that I haven't bumped a dock is so long? Hell....I don't even remember what its like to back up in a REALLY tight space. That makes me sound like a rookie, but I'm just trying to approach this best way possible so I don't lead on a company, and I can only hope a company won't lead me on (good luck I know). LOL.

Any ideas or others in this situation??

    Thanks alot!!!

i would keep QUIET about the back problem....once you mention that, you are DAMAGED GOODS...!!!

you may even get sent for x-rays. i believe Schneider for the longest time had x-rays done on one's back...how do i know this...?? i had applied to them myself and was told this is what they did....!!! but this was many years ago, whether or not they still do this i do not know.

as for the drop and hooks, i my area i see ads for those jobs, but they are not 100% drop and hook.

you could try for jobs that are "switch outs" or even line haul jobs at LTL carriers but those run nights (usually), i think the day time line haul jobs are for senior drivers...??

i wish you well, but for gosh sakes, DO NOT MENTION the back problems...!!

a can of worms is something best used for fishing.....nothing else...!!!

Sounds like you need a tanker job. In your location, shouldn't be too hard to come up with something petrochemical. But, a food grade would probably involve less physical work for you. Good luck!

Hey Chop... Sorry to read of your problems, but it's not the end of the world. Like mentioned, tanker jobs sound like they'd OK and maybe even some hopper jobs. Don't have to worry about backing into tight docks with either.

Thanks guys for all the feedback. I figured it would one of those, dont mention it unless I had to kinda things. I've been looking online today and plenty of stuff, but after seeing the dr, otr kinda scares me. It hasnt flared up in a couple months, but im sure it wouldn't take much bouncin around to anger it again:(

If yall know any hopper/tanker stuff that is based in houston, would lvoe to have a link to them :)

I do have my tanker endorsement but no hazmat. I honestly don't want to spend the money/time to get one after al these years of not having it. Plus I smoke, so.....I know alot of hazmat around here says thats a no no, being the petro stuff.

I'm just lost for ideas, I guess its the fact that life has changed for me and that I can't do what I want when I want anymore. On the up side, I posted my resume last night and I've already had 16 views and 2 emails. Jobs that won't work for me, but hey....glad to know that information gets out there quickly.

I would go back to driving a van and maybe a reefer. Conway is an option as well as JBS carriers.

Well, spoke with the dr again and he seems to think as long as I can put up with it, that flatbedding is ok as long as I'm not tarping or climbing loads. My broker is willing to work with this so my owner and I are now on the hunt to rent/lease a trailer.

Anyone know of a decent trailer lease/rental? I found a place in OH that is $700 flat fee monthly but they are out. Every place I've check that has decents rates are out of trailers, as expected!!

Just a quick update. My owner got me a stepdeck and is willing to allow me not to tarp anything and basically be as picky as I can, but still profitable for us both. My broker is willing to take on loading me with my limitations also, so I'm going to stick see how it goes with the stepdeck before calling it quits.

I talk to all the "major" carriers and I have 2 that I will apply for if this doesn't work out. I'm hoping not tarping and taking it easy will let me be productive still.
Should be getting back in my truck next week/weekend and we'll taker from there!
