Been with my current carrier [small fleet] first company and only company I've ever worked for 9 years as an independent contractor. Steady work but no growth.
Got offers to road test with Midland, Kriska, and Transx
I’ve driven all over Canada and into the US. I am long hauler, so the jobs offered all are OTR.
For those who switched after years with one company — what made you decide to leave, and what did you look at first (pay, freight, equipment, dispatch)? I have been told that because of today's economy, work has been slow, but the company I drive for has been consistent with pay and with work. I am from Toronto if that helps. Any advice or support would be appreciated ! Thanks gentlemen.
[ started off with 28 cents and I am currently getting 30 cents a mile running team. I have asked for a raise but they declined. I get about 15k to 20k miles per month. Take home pay could be $6k to 8k [CAD] a month BEFORE taxes]
To be honest I have learned a lot in this company. When I first started out I made multiple mistakes and the company has stuck with me thru thick and thin. I have managed to keep a clean CVOR if that helps.. ]
Need some help deciding!

The grass is not always greener on the other side.
And do you realize... take home pay is AFTER taxes? -
I am an independent contractor. I get paid hst on top of my pay.
-
What is hst?
-
Tax that the company doesn't cut. I think its different out here in ontario then in the states. The company doesn't cut tax, they include the hst into my pay. I have a accountant that prepares the numbers for me either quarterly/annually. I know this forums is predominantly usa based
-
That explains it so well, without even saying what hst actually means or is.
What you said makes no sense to me.
Tax that the company does not cut. Well, which taxes does the company cut? And what does cutting taxes mean?
Around here cutting means to do away with or reduce.Numb Thanks this. -
What is your definition of Growth?
I get the increase in pay, but if the work is steady, you have a stable life from it, and you are making money, then I would stay, but I don't like change.
The HST or Harmonized Sales Tax.
It is a consumption tax that combines the federal sales tax and provincial sales tax.
Because he is a contractor, his customer - the carrier - has to pay it, and he has to report it, I'm pretty sure has to send it to the government for King and Country.
Ontario is, I think, 13%.
Canadians get the crap taxed out of themselves.Moosetek13 and upnorthwpg Thank this. -
Ive quit after a good run... it wasnt financially motivated in my case, though.
I spent 6 years hauling wood chips locally for a big player in BC, ordered a brand new truck to lease on with from years 6-10 doing the same thing. I said yes to every single thing up until that point and quit when they threatened my contract over not rolling with their sudden change of plans, ONE TIME
"Youre sending me 2 hours away to hot load which means once I get there Ill sit for 3 hours which you wont pay me for, while theres the load I was originally planned to grab, sitting RIGHT HERE, at the mill where I park. I cant do it today, no one's home so I need to get up there and let my dog out for a crap, and I need to pick my daughter up from swimming in the eve, and then going for dinner with friends and family to celebrate my bday.
They didnt like that. Parked me the next day and dragged me into a meeting at their office about an hour away. I explained how being put in a situation to choose between work and family is really lousy, but it will never be a hard decision. And that I didnt appreciate them taking money off my dinner table with something that could have been squashed on the phone, rather than a show of force.
"You arent doing a good job of putting your family first by sacrificing your job to pick your daughter up from swimming and go for dinner afterwards"
I owe that ####### a thank you card, cus it pushed me to what Im doing now. I had a new job lined up before I even got home from that meeting.
Is trans x going to be much better? It just sounds a bit like a lateral move. A guy with your experience should be able to find a better job working for a small fleet, driving a nice truck, that pays you much better than your current gig. I have several friends "stuck" in jobs like these. It's safe, but you'll work your bag off and wont make enough money to actually do anything when you arent working your bag off.
I know I dump on OTR a lot lately, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a job out there in Toronto for you for $35-45/hr driving a truck for anyone but a trucking company. Would you consider something different? -
Nobody in the GTA is paying $35-$45 per hour.

Brutal! No ready mix, roll-off, vac truck etc?Peplow Thanks this.
