I’m currently looking at buying a truck and found a new leftover 2020 389 at a good price. Does anyone know of any potential problems to watch for, I’ve heard about the DEF “crystallizing” if it sets around a lot but I’ve never ran anything that new and know nothing about what to look for. Other than that the truck is set up the way I want other than 22.5s instead of 24.5s but I was going to ask them about changing them.

22.5s are the way to go, unless you are in the oilfield and off road a lot. The 22.5s roll easier and is the industry standard. Another factor is the gear ratio in the rear diffs.
bzinger Thanks this. -
Engine?

I just tried to get 24.5 low pro steers and cant find any ended up switching to 22.5 rims and 22.5 talls to match my 24.5 low pro drives.
bzinger, Tug Toy and Midwest Trucker Thank this. -
Engine is a Cummins efficiency 525/1850
I think it will be enough power and torque but I will be hauling logs in the mountains of WV.
Everyone here runs tall 24.5s but there running straight trucks with pup trailers, I’m going to try a short truck and trailer. I guess the tall 22.5 would be ok but I’d prefer the tall 24.5s. -
I’ll be hauling logs so I’ll be off road some, the rear gears are 3.91

I run the efficiency 450 and have had zero problems at all. Even on one that has high idle, still never seen a shop unless it’s normal maintenance. I run Kenworths myself but I’m sure the Pete would be well built.

That’s great to hear. I was going back and forth between kw and international hx that’s the only 2 dealerships near me then I found this leftover 2020 Pete that was spec the way I wanted and at a good price so I figured if something went wrong at least the resale would be high and the kw shop will honor the paccar warranty.

There was a fella on here not long ago that had purchased a new truck with an X15 Efficiency. Apparently Cummins limits your max RPM to 1,700 or 1,800? Have heard the Efficiency model uses a higher compression ratio than the Performance, which results in headgasket failures being more common.

Id go for it man. Buy the 5yr 500k extended Cummins warranty. It’s only $5000
I haven’t had to use it but it’s a peace of mind to run the truck 5 yrs and trade on a new one.Vampire Thanks this.
