When I bought the one on my profile, i just made sure i had BT insurance, and a temp tag then drove it home. Didn't get pulled over, or pulled around the back of a scalehouse. Had that happened, I would have provided proof that I just purchased it, and was driving it home.
Edit: I put no decals or anything on it. If you want, for safety, slap on a "Not For Hire" on the side, as mine did say that (it was a farm truck)Vitamin0110 Thanks this. -

I obtained temp insurance, farm plates, and 10 day inspection waiver and drove it back to the farm. I did two trucks this way...

Drive with no shirt on and sneeze on the window a lot. No one will stop you.
