I think this new routing system is very confusing and really isn't any better than the old system. Also the routes still run you thru country back roads they call state routes that really aren't meant for tractor trailers. Going thru small cities that have extremely tight turns and have people that have no idea what stop lines are for.

I'll look at the routing once or twice when I get the load and then I'll decide if I want to go the way they want me to or not. Most of the time I will follow it, but there have been times I haven't. One time they told me I couldn't take a faster way than what they had on the routing because it was more miles, so I took their way and ended up getting some bad fuel mileage because of it being two lane through numerous towns and who knows how many hills that slowed me down. I decided after that to go which way I want to go and not ask them since they aren't out here driving the truck.

Yeah I agree the new system is worse than the old and it was bad. Too cluttered up with stuff. I generally follow whatever they list but deviate whenever common sense dictates otherwise and they have never said a word as of yet. Guess we are starting to fuel at FJ more now after the takeover. Didn't fuel there once in all my training or first 2+ months alone but fueled there the last two times this week.

I agree that the new system isn't any better than the old opti. The new setup is hard to follow, and the routing is crazy. I long for the good old days of a fuel stop book and the atlas. Give me a dispatch, let me pick the shortest way, and I'll pick the place I want to fuel, park and shower. This is just one more way Roehl micro manages our life on the road.

Greetings, I too am headed to Roehl for the class of 9/6. I have been reading all you fellows are talking about and trying to learn as much as I can. It seems that I will have to have a good gps unit to back myself up as well as the atlas,(need to buy 1 yet). I have great anticipation and some anxiety waiting to get started. I assume all the units (Volvo's and Freight liners) are 2004 or 2005' models. I have everything to learn yet... I fly in to Marshfield 9/6. I am as green as they come but am willing to learn and do well at the career. I have a open mind and pay attention to details. I have a good attitude and am willing to under go all I need to be good at this. I thank all of you for sharing what you have experienced. I'm a bit shaky hearing all the bad stuff... I read everything I can find about what to expect. I have my cdl permit and Enhanced License and ready to do my final medical with Roehl. I have a Pre-hire letter for National Van to start. I'm quitting my job to do this. My dad was a O/O so we always had a truck in the driveway. I need to learn everything rite down to shifting... I am focused and ready... Anyone who has Roehl advice for me please feel . PS: Please don't tell me to run away, save myself or call me stupid. I know there are good and bad and I'm willing to deal with both. I need a career I can be proud of again and presently I am not getting that from my present career.Thank you all.

Don't quit your job. Seriously. You're flying in on Labor Day? That doesn't sound right. And flying directly to Marshfield doesn't sound right either. Usually they put you on a greyhound to a taxicab or give you a rental.
I've been trucking two years. I work 70 hours a week and make $700. Is that worth it for you? Maybe it will change once you've had 10 service calls in three months, which is what caused me to leave this company.
Also, where's SA? Saskatchewan is SK. I'm not sure what else it could be.
...and what any of this has to do with the new routing system, I'm not sure. -
Also, they run lots of Internationals.

sounds as though their routing system is set for shortest instead of practical

I apologize for the mis placed post. I just wanted to see what was said about a personal GPS sys. running along with the company suppled directions. Saratoga Springs that is. And I will be driving from CWA in a rent a car with my GPS (Personal). I'll be more careful where I post and what I say in the future. I am sorry and apologize. Last thing I wish to do is ANGER anyone... My BaD!

Personally I would not invest in a GPS unless you just have spare money to spend. Your atlas, CQ and phone will get you anyplace you need to be although a laptop with internet connection can help many times as well when all the other avenues fall through.
