    Hi Friends,

Last night i was on my way home at about 1am. Up too late and didn't realize the time....:biggrin_25523:

Anyway, i observed A LOT of trucks hauling Fuel and some freight at 1am.

I thought to myself, "how do they do it?" I'm usually asleep by 12am so i thinking "they must be NIGHT OWLS (or something).

How do these guys drive at night like this?
Is this common in the industry?
Do some truckers drive ONLY at night?

It's easier to drive at night than in the day.... less traffic, less road work, less accidents. Lower visibility, true enough... but there's not as much you have to watch out for, either (unless you're worried about a cop hiding in the bushes - so slow down at night.)

Been a night owl since my sophomore year in high school (that made things considerably difficult.) I love driving at night, fits my lifestyle and much lower stress due to less idiots to deal with.

I would say it's about a 70/30 split...70 % night and 30 % day driving....P & D guys pick freight up from 7 to 3..then it's back to the terminal where dock workers "break" the freight and load trailers to be sent out that evening around 9 to mid-night depending on how far away the next terminals are..that's dry freight...food service / fuel companies are more than 80% nightime since most of their customers want deliveries made in the lowest volume of business hours...mid-nite to 6 am....

    Thanks Tony...Now---what is P & D ?

Ok...fuel companies want night driving. Makes sense. BUT i see A LOT of fuel being delivered in the daytime too. But YOU ARE more experienced than i am, so I WILL TAKE your word for it!

Oh them guys who run nights use stuff that will make you slam on the brakes for the red lights in the salt flats, talk to a purple elephant in the passenger seat and chase your scalp back onto your head because its sitting on the side of your face.

In all seriousness its not bad once your used to it. I've run days, and nights, its a rotation kinda depends on the day or the eek. You think its bad running at night?

Try watching the sun rise, set, rise and then set again without any sleep. Been there done that...more times than I care to talk about........

When I drove entertainment, we always drove nights, you'd leave after the show and drive to the venue or hotel for the next day. Toughest time is 4-6 a.m. and the worst was 12-3 a.m. when the drunks are trying to find their way home.

P&D is pick up and delivery. It is a term used at companies for the local drivers then it is back to terminal then broke down and shipped out to different terminals. I used to work the night shift for almost 8 years and for the past year and a half it has been day time and it is a different world.
