Here's an idea, iF you don't have access to water, then put in the straight coolant and when its low again, just add straight water. Balance it out on top offs, too easy.EZX1100 Thanks this.

forever
i thought nitrates are in hotdogs and nitrites are in coolant -
nitrates nitrites....whatever....i heard it called nitrates
-
cavitation is real I had a mxs cat in the shop for coolant in oil. Dropped oil pan pressurized coolant system it was sprayin threw the liner on two cylinders. When i pulled the liners out it looked like swiss cheese.

So when the OP said he "doesnt run nitrates" does he mean he never changes the coolant filter? I'm guessing so. If you change coolant often enough it shouldn't be a problem anyways. Anything more than a year you're just asking for problems. I know of several engines that needed to be rebuilt prematurely due to holes in the liners. There won't be any signs until it's too late, and then its an expensive lesson to learn.
Maintaining the SCA's in a cooling system is just as important as checking the oil level. -
If you are using DCA4 that is what happens, the aditive will be depleted but the filter will be full of Aluminum and steel corrosion material. Try it drain the filter and feel the weight.
Use either a Power cool or power cool plus Dex-cool or a Noat antifreeze. -
This truck was a customers truck not one of our fleet all i know is it was green coolant. This yellow is nitrite free because of aluminum and egr coolers. The only trucks ive seen use this is internationals maxxforce engines and they say no more than 10% cross contamination is acceptible it will void warranty.

The nitrite free stuff actually cools better. Nitrites coat absolutely everything, and are hard on certain items. Nitrites are phased out in most other places of the world. Detroit diesel for a while wasn't allowing nitrite in extended life coolant. They've found that OAT coolants don't really need nitrites. Green coolant still needs nitrites.
red = nitrite long life coolant
yellow = nitrite free long life coolant -
If the liners are pitted then when rebuilding it I would recommend removing the cover plate for the water pump, it will be corroded.
Color works in certain antifreeze but not all you can buy additives, Dex-cool in bottles to change green to Dex cool.
I was involved with Dex-cool, when it first came out used on a 3406B, the difference between the corrosion, on units using the Dex-cool and DCA4, was phenomenal.
The main thing about coolant is you can not mix it, putting a DCA4 filter on a Noat or Dex-cool system destroys it and it must be flushed, cleaned with restore, and then recharged.
Just a thought!
