    Hi,

The truck I just got stops idling after about 5 minutes, doesn’t have an APU and it’s 84 degrees in here. Any suggestions other than quitting? It’s an international.

    Best regards, John 80C1499B-97FE-4D26-824B-E4A21A3E3387.jpeg

You can try to set trailer brakes while releasing tractor brakes. Some trucks that tricks it into allowing it to idle

Not to sound like a chicken sheet, but is that even safe to do? I know the trailer brakes will hold me back, but dang lol

There are a few ways to try and override the idle-shutdown. First, release the tractor brakes while the trailer brakes are still set. If that doesn't work I would idle the engine up and see if that works. If not, then then try what the Navistar Bodybuilder Guide says by pressing the clutch pedal when you receive the idle shutdown warning.

Doesn't WE have a Driver Comfort Policy? I find it odd that any company would not have such a policy in place. Have you checked with the Safety Department to see if such a policy exists? No driver should be subjected to the summer heat (or winter cold) without adequate comfort.

Are you sure there isn’t some kind of battery powered bunk AC? When I was at Roehl years ago, that’s what they put in their new freightliners.

Another thing I see some companies do is set the truck’s parameters so that it will idle when the outside temp is over xx degrees. Call your shop, Maybe they just need to get your truck in and adjust the parameters.

Good luck getting that thing to idle. We had a 2020 international daycab like that that would only idle 5 mins when we got it. Absolutely none of the “tricks” would work. Had to take it to the dealer to get it reprogrammed.

Go look at some YouTube video's. There are some tricks left like the sensor on top of the driver mirror and the sensor along the frame rail over near the fifth wheel.

I would call your maintenance department and ask the appropriate questions. I know ours won’t idle longer than 5 minutes between 40 and 90 degrees.(we have apu’s) This can be over ridden by depressing the accelerator pedal when it starts to shut down. Get you a stick to hold the accelerator in the desired position. You should idle it above 1000 anyway, to get good flow through the exhaust filter.
