Purchased used approx 13 mos back, truck has no engine coolant filter. I have flushed the system, refilled with red antifreeze and distilled water, but wondering if the lack of a coolant filter was one of Paccar's ingenious cost cutting measures? If I need to add one, by some chance, would anyone have part #s for the filter, and filter head?
Hard to believe that a coolant filter is simply not needed.
    Thanks in advance.

Purchasing the filter, Cummins makes a good kit, I am a firm believer that they should be standard equipment, plumb it from the water pump outlet, and back to the suction side of the pump.
As for using cheap coolant, I worked for 4 years on engines and coolant isues cost more damage than anything else, especially in a Cat. Working on the "B"s we use to always replace the cover plate for the water pump because it was eaten away, that was with DCA4.
    Just a thought!

Aren't the majority of diesel engines suppose to use a "LOW SILICATE" coolant ?

The problem with not having a coolant filter is the filter has sca additive for keeping nitrites up and molibates up. If your using long life coolant all you have to worry about is freeze point and ph. Your ph should be bettween 8 and 10. The nitrites protect from cavitation from cylinder pressure. What happens is the heat from piston transfers to outside of liner and creates bubbles then the piston vibration pops the bubbles and creates pitts in outside of liners. The nitrites put a protective coating on liners to stop cavitation. Coolant maintinace is very important to longevity of liners and block.

When your engine is not equipped with a coolant filter you can use the liquid additive that comes in a bottle to add SCA's to your cooling system.

I was told by my mechanic to add one bottle a year. Dont know if thats correct or not? I've got a farm truck that gets about 20,000 mi. a year.

That is a good general rule to follow if you don't want to test the PH level of coolant with test strips, although it's really simple to do. You can pick up the test strips at walmart in the fish/tank department. If your PH level tests good, then you won't need to add any additive until it tests low.

Like Gear Head said, between 8 and 10 and you're good to go. You're welcome.
