Regs never stated that you had to punch a time clock, only that your employer had to keep a record of your hours worked. That could be a time clock, a RODS with time logged "on duty not driving", or even just a scrap piece of paper with the required info written on it. Required info is name, date, start time, end time, and total number of hours worked. That means even if you punch a time clock, you still need to total up the hours worked each day or it does not contain the required info.
No logbook needed?

In reference to your comment about elogs, it seems pretty easy. If guys on paper followed the current HOS, they would not be afraid of elogs. The rules are all exactly the same. Other than the problem of another govt mandate telling private businesses how they must operate, the problem is not elogs. The problem is HOS. If we can't win a fight with FMCSA over HOS, there is no need to fight with them over elogs. It isn't the elogs that are unworkable, it is the hours of service. Just my 2 cents.Makeajump, Feedman, misterG and 1 other person Thank this.

Its BOTH,,This isn't about Following the HOS.Most of us do on paper. I NEVER EVER get close to a 70 or even a 14 hour day anymore-
This isn't about Current HOS to me....its about something being FORCED onto me..THATS MY PROBLEM!!
That's My Truck,My ECM (That I just crawled out from under today to fix pin# 34 on the harness side to Fix an engine shutdown)
Anyway- Guys like me don't want Cables and devices cluttering up our Dashes- I Certainly Don't.
Again,Its Not about Cheating,I don't work hard enough to Cheat or go thru a 70/14
Like the above thread.......Force an ELD on the Accident Prone unsatisfactory carriers- Not the Good Guys,Whom done nothing wrong- This isn't about safety- And You know that-
Have a good dayBean Jr., brian991219, MrEd and 1 other person Thank this. -
Bullspit. The "monthly fee" for the PeopleNet the carrier is pushing on us because of this stupid mandate will cost me the same as 35 YEARS worth of paper logs every 18 months. Not only that, but it opens a back door into my truck's ECM that can be exploited by hackers because my truck was built before the age of connectivity. It was assumed anyone accessing the ECM was hard-wired into it. Don't think it can happen? They've already demonstrated the ability to hack cars and passenger jets. Why would you assume they couldn't do the same with a truck? Hauling a high-value load? They can shut you down. Or, just be in the wrong place at the wrong time when someone decides they want a good "out of control truck" video for youtube, and just as you start down the mountain they pin your throttle wide open and start running your auto trans up through the gears. Cost & security are very real concerns that I've NEVER had to worry about on paper logs, that become a problem the minute that stupid ELD is put in my truck.
When ELD-equipped trucks stop running into stopped traffic and speeding through town, I'll consider that perhaps they might have a safety benefit...but what is ACTUALLY happening proves the "safety" argument to be 180 degrees out of whack. The closer we get to the enforcement date, and the more companies that put those boxes in their trucks, the more frequently we're seeing these ridiculous crashes where trucks are plowing full steam ahead through stopped traffic. Look up pretty much any mega ATA company that has been running elogs with governed trucks on the FMCSA site and look at how many 10+ and 15+ mph speeding violations they've had...in trucks that CANNOT do the speed limit on the open road! Where are these violations happening? In town. Construction zones. School zones. The absolute worst places TO speed. Why are they speeding? Chances are, they're racing against that unforgiving clock. -
You have brought up several very valid points for consideration. But, where does that make my comment "bullspit"? I wasn't addressing EVERY potential issue with elogs. I was addressing the most common issue most of these whiners bring up. I am not wrong about the issue I did address. Most topics are multi-faceted. It is perfectly ok to address one facet at a time. Really, it is.

You are right about everything you said. But like I said to Pedigrees Bulldog, it is ok to discuss just one part of the entire problem. Ive said many times that i do not agree with the government mandating elogs for a number of reasons. One of which is that i do not care for government mandating a product lobbyists push because the manufacturers can't sell enough of their products based on its merits. Was the same thing with ABS brakes. An immature product forced on a market through mandate. How many fines related to ABS have been issued and the systems still dont work right. Or the radar braking system on trucks. I know they aren't mandated yet, but there are people working on that as we speak. I was simply addressing what i see as the most vommon complaint against elogs. But i wasnt defending elogs and i certainly wasnt implying my comment was the only valid concern with them.stayinback Thanks this.

It never ends I tell ya......I remeber that- Just like the CDL in 1991.....Where does it end?
Just Keep making new laws without Repealing old ones..........
Thought Trump's first executive order was to make legislation Repeal 2 rules for every new 1.
they Just Keep Pushing and Pushing and Pushing until they drive people out their minds
How much More are these dumbfounded people gonna take?
If They say jump. Will people say "how High"?
Just Keep Messing around with people- They'll get it in the End though..Thats For Sure.MrEd Thanks this. -
I think Trumps executive order only covered new regs. Not ones that are already in process. As for how much people are gonnas take, I don't know. Many people just feel it's hopeless and there is nothing we can do. And government has made it pretty obvious they do not care what the constituency thinks. Almost every industry is being set upon pretty hard. Every beaurocracy is geared up in a nandate writing frenzy. I don't know. Every time I think of leaving this industry I hear some of the stuff going on in some other industries, and think I'll just stay in this one and do the best I can.stayinback Thanks this.

The truth also is, it has to be interstate for the regulations to kick in. Yes many states follow the federal requirements, but they don't need to. California allows 12 hours driving instead of 11, Texas is going to require ELDs in intrastate trucks. Why would they need to do that if the FMCSA mandate made their use necessary for intrastate operations? Because the FMCSA has nothing to do with intrastate operations, except hazmat.
