Operations and drivers two different worlds here and i got promoted out of a truck and am in this division of a big west coast fleet. What i am finding out scares the crap out of me! I have been reading the post here for years now and to be honest i thought some things here were in loonville but now longer!
Here is some things i have found out the new 2010 and 2011 trucks no matter the manufacture in correspondence with federal DOT and the trucking companies and the new Qualcom 200 unit have come to an lets say a understanding!! Why for one DOT has complete access to your
e-log! two the companies knows when you get out of your truck (look at the turn signal light when you open your door!!) three the new www.iteris.com lane departure system has been turned into a moving video camera. there is allot more it does i tells them if or not and when you open the hood to look at the engine yes they can watch you look at the engine compartment there is so so much more this system can do and does do there was one post here that said they can even listen in on cell phone calls this is true but its not done through the quallcom unit it is done through the windows based computer that the quallcom unit runs off of! have e you got a notebook computer with a web cam built in?
Go down and talk to a person the repairs cell phone and ask how easy it is the listen in on a cell phone call any windows base computer with the right software can do this.
they are some here in operations that cruse thees web sites to spin misinformation! i have had to go through two of there classes that teach you how to deal with driver and how to use words to manipulate people into doing what the companies wants them do do! this is kind of a weird feeling to me at least some people really get into this stuff.
what some in the upper department heads want is a system that can control every aspect of the driver when he or she is behind the wheel like if you are on the phone the system can cut the phone call off or slow the truck down when they think you are going to fast and to be honest they can do that now at least were i work at they can they can tell the qualcom unit to tell the ecm of the engine what to do and how fast to go by remote access.
why am i saying all of this some one has to!! since i found out what i have at this point i am looking for a job outside of this industry because i now understand were they want to go with all this!! the bottom line is this if you do something wrong and get into an accident the company will use all this info to put all the blame on you they can!!! just make sure you get a lawyer that is not from the company that you work for!!

I'm not so sure all of those things are bad. If used incorrectly it may be a violation of privacy. However if this is used correctly this can be used to cultivate truly professional drivers. Think this is just going on in trucking? Hmm.

And that right there, is the big problem, as I see it. As a driver, how in the heck do we know whether its being used properly or not? I am not a techno person so wouldn't know the 1st thing about how to check this stuff out.Everett and bullhaulerswife Thank this.

Wow..."beep beep" has six posts at this point...each just a little more paranoid than the previous.
Dude; get some help....seriously. -
To cultivate professional drivers the companies need to produce professional management, leadership by example.Meltom Thanks this.

I can't argue with that, I'm fighting that battle as we speak. All I can do is stick to my guns and hope that others follow by example.

I am glad to hear that you are providing the seeds for growth, when management takes the responsibility seriously it always will be better. While employed by a very large construction company with a mega fleet of heavy haulers I took over the transportation management for 6 months, after 30 days in the seat it became apparent that some did not fathom the responsibility behind a wheel of a large truck.
My rules were:
Do not lie to me
Do not hide things from me
Take responsibly for your actions
Beyond that anything was possible for them for advancement, I never lied or cheated anyone and always very frank with them. Everyone hated me the first two months, I was the prick or the hard ###.
Some people wanted my head on a platter since the trucking end and the maintenance shop was overturned, I had the master mechanic fired for stealing and prosecuted. Over 400k of missing parts and over on credit cards charged to the company with no paper trail and phony work orders.
The owner of the company and the investors were happy, but trust me I had a skin of Kevlar and really did not care since it was my job to keep it running. The former truck boss was fired and found to be a conspirator with the master mechanic in the whole, midnight truck parts ordeal.
Was my actions perfect, not always but I tried and gave my best without favoritism beyond the scope of my position. The one thing I could say is no one was going to make me, lie or cheat or steal.Rollover the Original, Meltom, gearjamin and 2 others Thank this.
