Sorry for not getting back Been very busy and havent gotten on puter in almost a month.I requested a magistrate look into the ticket, no luck still out 175 clams.What the dot is getting us on is overall length,w/ a highmount they say you can be no longer than 65 ft with a 53 ft trailer I cant think how you can be legal w/ any truck,I had nothing hanging off the back, it was the top car in front it was behind the sleeper so it didnt add anything to overall length of truck, just another money grab by michigans finest . My question is a flatbed can have 3ft off front 4ft off back leo told me I couldnt have any overhang off front even though it was behind the sleeper.I am currantly moving all my business out of Mi registering out state.

It won't matter where you register your fleet, you still have to abide by the laws in each State you are in. Are you a stinger steer? My State is pretty much the same as you stated that Michigan is.
Here's the law book section for my State dealing with automobile/boat haulers:
A truck or truck tractor and semitrailer combination designed for and engaged exclusively in the transportation of automobiles or boats may not exceed 65 feet in length;
2. A stingersteered automobile transporter or a saddlemount or a fullmount combination may not exceed 75 feet in length; and
3. A. A maxicube vehicle described in subsection (a)(4)(i) of this section may not exceed 65 feet in length; and
B. A maxicube vehicle described in subsection (a)(4)(ii) of this section may not exceed 60 feet in length;
So it's not just Michigan, you might want to check with every State you operate in. -
That's a flat out lie. I don't have to see the law to figure that one out. Every car hauler configuration I've ever seen has been able to hang cars off the front and the back. And I mean over the front of the truck. I still don't see how some of those guys see out of the windshield with a car in the way.
Having one hanging off in the middle of the rig has nothing to do with length. I'd take it to court and make them prove exactly which law you broke and how exactly you broke it. If they want their money make them work for it. -
High mount car carriers are not allowed any over hang past the front of the trailer. Some states enforce the rule and some don't ,but it is a federal law.

If your truck does not have load carrying capacity, you do not meet the Federal definition of an auto hauler and therefore do not get the overhand exemptions that auto haulers get. The Feds came down on our state to begin enforcing this and so we see a LOT of "car haulers" who are in violation.

I know we have talked about this before, but the issue at hand, (and I do realize that you don't make the rules) is that no other niche in this industry is hamstrung by that 65' rule, with probably 98% of the trailers on the interstate being 53'ers it is #### near impossible too meet that rule, and high mount auto haulers are being penilized, it needs to be addressed! -
The only way a 53 foot trailer would meet the 65 foot requirement is with a daycab. I beleive, and i've been told by wyoming and arizona that standard length is 70 feet.
My last truck was 77 feet with a 48 flat. Arizona measured my truck before the last one at 65 feet with a 48 flat. I'm not sure how that all works out. I knew the truck had a longer wheelbase as the boss ordered it that way. I only had an extra 2 feet to play with on the front overhang. 2 1/2 if i pushed it.
I'm thinking arizona messed up on the 65 foot measurement as the truck wasn't sucked in for van aerodynamics like the megas are doing these days. But i can't see how the newer truck would even be 8 feet longer like i'm thinking. 3 feet on the frame maybe.KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
Lat week we got a 100 ticket in Fl. for being "over-length" with NO overhang off either end, so next morning I call weigh station, guy says if you are an auto hauler you can only have a 50 trailer, not 53.
I politly told him that we are not classed as an auto hauler since we don't haul freight on the truck, and we were no different than any of the other sleeper cab 53 trailers running around down there.
Said he didn't care, if we had cars on the deck, we are an auto hauler, some days you just can't win. I am 71 long total. -
Isn't that why we see carriers like Reliable carriers that use enclosed vans to haul cars ?
