How realistic would it be to make a career change to a company driving long-hauler, and to offset a paycut, not bother to rent or own a residence while starting off? I'd have a family address to use for my license, CDL, etc..
The intention would be to drive my butt off for a few months if a company would allow. Then relocate away from MA when I'm ready and can afford a place down south, something I've wanted to do for years. Not paying rent or a mortgage up here will more than pay any difference in salary from a career change, and I've got family in the area to crash with if need be.
Anyone with no wife and kids ever start out that way?

Thats the way I been doing it the last 30 years. When you need to get away from the truck and you will just get a motel.I don't have any family connections so I always get a mail box at either a UPS store or a post office box.Don't ever tell the IRS about it though it will cost you your deductions if you do.

Through the '90s I used my parents' address, living in the truck full time. No rent, no utilities... too bad I was so terrible at saving money.
D'OH! -
exactly what I was thinkin.. minus not blowing the dough, though knowing myself I can't rule it out entirely
-
I'm seriously considering doing it myself when I hit the road in September.

Why bother to throw money away renting if you have no wife? Just rent a motel or a daily rental if you want a break. I did for years too!
BUT: The IRS will have all of those "rental addresses" before to long so don't do that route! I know you have a married friend somewhere. or a friend with a house that he OWNS so ask them if you can use their address. Or buy a large camper or camper trailer th pull behind a pickup and park it at the yard and ask them if you can use it as a mailing address. Or get a KOA to let you use them as l;ong as you pay them $50 a month. Just be careful in screwing with the IRS as this year they made the announcement they are checking up or auditing a lot of returns and one of the flags was UPS and other mail box addresses. Me I'd rather be seen in public with an ugly woman than go through another IRS audut!American-Trucker Thanks this. -
Im currently in illinois and might be inbetween adresses for awhile, im curious as to the regulations on using a p.o box for adress on cdl. thanks

I am not sure if it will work for your licence or not, I do know it will not work for taxes though. You will not be able to claim perdiem for the time you do not have a tax home. Because if you do not have one you are never away from it.

I don't know about Illinois, but, California will allow you to have a P.O. Box as a mailing address on your CDL (that's all I have on my CDL) but if I remember correctly I also had to provide a physical address on the application.

Man, i used to live in a real small town and the post office was on a road that was about a mile long. anyone on that road did not recieve mail to their house, did not have a mailbox. It was Pleasant St, and they could use an address like boxnumber Pleasant St. This looks like a legit street address. There are probably lots and lots of towns that you can get away with this in.
Orrrrr make a friend where you want to move! use their address
