Be aware that people with Autonomic Nervous System disorders and some cardiac issues (such as mitral valve prolapse and tachycardia) are often misdiagnosed with "panic attacks".
Been there, done that...they do have some similar features but very different origins (psychological vs. physical). There are often medications and ways of coping to make the physically based ones very manageable or stop them altogether. The psychologically based ones...a bit tougher to get under control.
I'd get a full physical including cardiac and neurological workups to rule out a physical cause before anything else. Find a doctor who is familiar with Dysautonomia / Autonomic Nervous System Disorders as they will best be able to give you a definitive answer as to whether you are looking at true panic attacks or if they are psuedo panic attacks symptomatic of another problem altogether.

Now that the air has cleared, I'll state that while I've not had panic attacks, I do deal with bouts of anxiety now and then, but nothing near a full-blown panic attack. My stuff is handled with meds and exercise.
BUT... if you have debilitating panic attacks, no, you should not be driving a CMV in my opinion!! -
I don't get it Beer Runner. Normally your posts are rather intelligent and decent, but these have no basis in logic. You're an expert on panic attacks because you have them? Experiencing something does not make one an expert in it. I get sever bouts of depression, but I am in no way an expert on depression.
And although I agree someone who has never broken a bone will never know the pain, that doesn't mean that they can't help it to be set correctly and mended quickly. One does not have to suffer a malady to be able to help in the treatment of the malady in question.
Education is key. Both school type educating, and the education from those who will experiment on themselves. Using both will give the best results.trucker_101 Thanks this. -
Now, you see, it's answers like that, that will cause people to not even try to seek treatment. You seem to be going 180 degrees the other way.
There is a middle ground, people. -
Is that actually a panic attack when you are driving? I have details to determine if its panic attacks or anxiety. I suggest, if the small print of panic attacks are proper, you go for a counseling reasonably than a medication. It's more effective.
Bumpy Thanks this. -
Sorry to bring this old thread back up,but as someone who has suffered from panic attacks and anxiety disorder off and on for the last 5 years I certainly know what a misunderstood illness it really is. No disrespect but people like Ronin and Nightwind really DO NOT have a clue as to how panic attacks really work and have no basis to make a formal opinion on whether a driver should or shouldn't drive. That is entirely up to each individual physician to decide, and NO,it is not a disqualifying illness. You are only required to bring it up with your medical examiner but it is up to the examiner to decide if it will really affect your driving. In most cases they don't reach a severe enough level long enough to hinder you from getting from point a to point b.Here are some REAL facts about panic attacks and GAD(generalized anxiety disorder) that apparently Mr Ronin missed thru all his/her years of getting educated on it:
1.Most panic attacks do not last more than 3 minutes since the body's "fight or flight response" cannot hold the panic in for longer than that, however waves of anxiety can last for a few hours.
2.Most panic attacks do NOT have all the symptoms associated with what you read.Only 3 of them are usually present since the body simply does not have enough storage room to hold it all in.
3.Panic attacks are NOT a serious physical problem. They only become a problem when you try avoid going to places or DRIVING due to fear of having another one. That is when you need to seek help. Cognitive behavorial therapy is usually the best method to managing panic attacks and eventually will end them or make them very mild. In other words,if you have them while driving and than avoid driving altogether(like some here have suggested)in fear of having another one than you will make the illness even worse.
4.Panic attacks are simply YOU being afraid of YOU.It is just a vicious cycle of you chasing your fear when there is really nothing to fear.
5.The quickest way to end a panic attack is to NOT try to stop it from happening. Let it happen and before you know it the feelings will dissipate.
6.Panic attacks and GAD are often related to OCD(Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and the 2 usually go hand in hand. Sometimes all you have to do is treat one of them and both will be treated.
7.The quicker a panic attack builds up to a severe level the quicker it fizzles and dissipates.
8. If you have recently started having panic attack symptoms the first thing to do is to get a FULL physical checkup, including a stress test,MRI,and blood work to rule out any physical cause. When everything comes back ok(which it usually does) eventually the panic attacks will slowly go away since you are reassured that nothing is really wrong with you.
9.Remember,the best way to control a panic attack is to NOT control it. Let it get as worse as it will get and it will quickly dissappear.
10. Panic attacks are triggered when your body's "fight or flight response" activates and releases adrenaline even when there is no danger really present. The only way to turn it off is to not try.
There you go Beer Runner.I hope reading all of this helps. Remember, you have to FACE the year. Not escape it. It takes a lot of time and practice. Im still in practicing mode and yes I still have a 2-year medical card. So don't let some of these self-proclaimed experts try to tell you whether you should or shouldn;t be driving. Ok Im done for now.
