One construction company I worked for had a 345 Cat excavator. To move it, they'd take off the bucket, stick, and counterweight.
Could one simply just pull a bigger permit if they have enough truck with enough axles to support the weight, or is some degree of dismantlement always required with equipment about that size?
Permit weights and load reduction...

I've never heard of having to dismantle any part of a non divisible load to get permitted with the exception of dozer blades in a couple states
-
They're around 100,000lbs ready to work, I've seen them loaded in Victoria with everything other than a bucket.
-
How do you determine to what degree you have to break the machine down?
-
I never got into stuff that had to be torn down for transport, other than cranes.
Loaded a D8 out of an auction in PA, they pulled the blade, and arms off. I asked why, he said PA requires the blade be pulled off, or have some special guards put on the sides to protect motorists. Also would have needed 1 or 2 pilot cars, IIRC this only pertained to blades of a certain width, wanna say 12' or more.
With some of the bigger equipment, it's probably cheaper to tear it down, move it on multiple trucks, and reassemble it, versus moving it on one truck. -
Alot depends on where it picks up at and going to
Then the costs for a big trl.
Sometimes just cheaper to drop the counter wght and bucket. Taking the bucket off helps lower hgt. Also -
Some states use to have a deal if can reduce in less than 8 hours, you strip it
W. Va used to be that way. Oh is like Pa. If blade is over 12 wide and not local move I believe it has to come off as also
Jd4020 would have that answerMACK E-6 Thanks this. -
I remember someone posting a pic of it easy of those farm tractor thingy'so with dual wheels being oversized, not breaking it down and someone posted a reg about having to break it down if you can within 8 hours.
-
Yea it was our favorite step decker I think who hauled it, never got busted though. Lucky him
-
We haul the 349's and 345's quite often. Depending on what model it is. Usually stripped of counter weight and bucket. Then sometimes fully dressed!
