Please explain

    I was the night dispatcher a union, slip seat job at Chemical Leaman over 30 years ago.

    It was seniority dispatch with a guarantee number of hours depending on the day your week started. whenever a man decided he didn't want to do his run today [shop steward did it a lot] I would then call the next junior man available. Each junior man could refuse until I got to the bottom. When the most junior man refused, I then told him he was being forced.

    He either came in or was terminated.

    On the other hand the guys who ran mileage would 'time out' at the max miles before overtime by Wednesday night or Thursday morning and the junior men filled in making their 30, or 20, or more working into the weekend. In busy summer times it was impossible to get the 'time in' guys to come back even though it was all overtime. Most were already down the shore fishing...

    Rinse and repeat Sunday night at 2300.

    We started a Cyrogenics run and that was bid. 16 tractors, 18 trailers and 33 drivers. Each truck was re-dispatched every 16 hours.

    A bunch of the junior men bid on filling in behind the drivers absorbed from the Cyro company in order to have weekends.

    You should get a load of what the railroad would want. Once that phone rings you have a hour and change to be at the engine. At least what I was told. 24/7

    I like to wait by the phone all my life. Not. (You young ones need to watch Waynes World to understand the syntax abuse of the word Not.)
