I'm thinking about attending Westwind CDL training center. It's thru a community college in Cuba, MO. I need two pre-hire letters to get in. Can anyone recommend a couple company's that will do this, and a little inside on the company. Also what do you think about getting your cdl like this as compared to going threw Swift at C1 truck driving school. Going to Westwind i won't owe anything when done. It's fully paid for, but i don't know the credibility of this place or how company's look at it compared to the schools they send you to that you have to pay back. Please help need some advice. I already have my permit and are committed to making a career of this and just want to get off on the best path possible.

Why do you need a pre-hire letter? Usually schools don't require this unless you have a problematic background. Even if this is the case, you can get pre-hire letters.
-
Community college program is a good idea; you can choose from many companies this way.
Contact some companies and request a pre-hire letter:
Girton Propane Service
Abilene Motor Express
Freymiller
Dynamic Transit
Trailiner Corp.
Fischer Trucking
Magnum Ltd.
Southern Refrigerated Transport
TransAm
Schuster
Western Dairy Transport
MCT Transportation
Carolina Cargo - this is a second chance company drivers use when other companies won't hire them. They do west coast turnarounds back to back hauling refrigerated products.
The more pre-hires the better; the school only wants two, but more is better for you for choosing which company you want to work for.Last edited: Jul 6, 2016

Pre hire letters mean absolutely zero. Probably something pushed by the schools years back. You calling and applying and getting approved is the same.

Might have something to do with receiving financial aid or a grant, and is needed to submit to satisfy the underwriter or whatever makes the yes/no approval decision for the aid or grant.
Makes no sense a truck driver school would question if there is a market for what they produce. They know there's plenty of demand for new CDL holders.
Or, maybe they are asking the driver to ascertain if they are "clean enough" to get hired by a reputable carrier BEFORE taking their money and spending 5 weeks with them. That would be a good thing if that's the case. It's awful to hear all the stories of driver wannabe's who endured the hassle and expense of completing driver school, then come to find out they are unemployable in the industry, due to their past history.jvar4001 Thanks this. -
I think its used as marketing tools and moral boosters for students. Thats why some schools have "recruiters" who help with placement. Out of date since everyone has internet on their phones.
-
Forgot about that; you're right! That's one of the reasons.
-
What would be the financial reason out of curiosity? I would think in order to get a Pre-Hire you would already need a CDL?

Many companies will provide a pre-hire letter, but the job is contingent upon successfully completing cdl school and having any required endorsements.
Many cdl schools require this for potential drivers with criminal records. The schools don't want a graduate passing the word that they went there and can't find a job. -
Makes sense. School I had searched out pre hire letters once there. Loved it. Wasnt fancy but great people. Americas Driving Force in Atlanta. Definitely recommend it. Price was VERY reasonable if pay up front. Somewhere around 2500$ for full 160 hour course.
Chinatown Thanks this.
