Hi any info would be appreciated.
Driving team with my husband for the last 8 years we have always done 1 PTI per 24hr period - as directed by the companies we worked for - NOT one each.
Also have never had a dot inspection violation on our log books ever.
Today I get a sarcastic message from the new girl in the office telling me I'm in violation for not doing a PTI even tho my husband had in the 24hrs???
I asked her had the rules changed and her answer wasn't helpful and I can't find anything on Google. ...anyone know for sure either way?
Thanks

The regulations do not require a PTI at all. They only require 2 things:
1) that the driver is satisfied the truck is in safe mechanical condition before driving
2) that they note any defects at the end of their shift.
That said, what's the harm in walking around looking at lights, thumping tires, & just observing for anything unusual? Takes 2-3 minutes, catches 90% of the stuff that can go wrong during a shift, and keeps idiots like your office worker (and some equally idiotic DOT officers) happy. (Of course, one of you should still do a more thorough inspection at least once a day).Last edited: Nov 3, 2016

Slightly sexist...

I tell you what. I cannot get near a vehicle without running my eye over it the way I run it over my wife or ex or whatever. I usually catch something that wrong when it's wrong.
We constantly checked our 18 wheeler. Logging same and filling out the little trip inspection forms to turn in was routine. Literally mindless jotting scribbles on paper unless something came up that formally requires fixing to be DOT ready for battle.
When I am on top of a mountain I get really picky. People point and laugh Then pass me crying that they are smelling burning and brakes are not working much.Ke6gwf, CasanovaCruiser, EWV and 1 other person Thank this. -
Lol yeah, shame on me. I somehow interpreted the original post as saying the husband normally does the pretrips when it only said he did it for that day.MidWest_MacDaddy and EWV Thank this.

The rule is each driver should do it beginning of their shift. There is really no excuse not to have a second pair of eyes to look the truck over to counter complacency.
To me not doing a pre-trip is lazy.TequilaSunrise, spyder7723, x1Heavy and 2 others Thank this. -
I was the same way before I came off the road.x1Heavy Thanks this.

Thanks guys...lol so funny sexist

.
Yea not saying the other one of doesn't check the vehicle but haven't been loging an actual PTI ...if it has to be logged fair enough but tell us not send silly messages from the office out of the blue lol. Any ways will now log a PTI each, every time
Cheers -
To keep the company happy just log one at the beginning of your shift. You don't actually have to do it.
EWV Thanks this. -
I can typically pass a scale 5 times a day, so it gets done every day without question.
In the case of a team though, that presents a little bit different set of circumstances. They live in the truck, so they'll likely be more attuned to anything that may be slightly "off", so examining the truck every 24 hours should be fine.
Now hooking up to a different trailer calls for doing one right then and there, IMO.alghazi, x1Heavy, EWV and 1 other person Thank this.
