    Hi everyone,
I hope to be getting into trucking in August and have already been invited to the orientation at Prime. Prime doesn't sound bad as far as pay goes and training but I have to stay with them for a year and deal with a lightweight tractor which is roughly half the size of a regular sleeper from what I'm told or option B is to go to Roadmaster near where I live and pay for my CDL outright and go to KLLM or Werner which has told me they would be interested as well but don't offer training outside of Ms so I would need to go to Roadmaster. Is one better then the other? Which one would all of you recommend between the 3? I've heard to stay away from Werner, Swift and CR England. I've been in the technical field for 20 years so training is important also. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Out of your list I like the idea of KLLM the best. You could go to Roadmaster or even a community college in which you can get a student loan or possibly a grant. Then you aren't committed to the training company if things don't work out.
Living in Florida you ought to consider a company that runs refrigerated as most of the freight coming out of FL is temperature controlled. I usually hauled into the Walmart DC in Arcadia and picked up a load out of Tampa or Deland coming out. Many times I had to deadhead out of FL to get a load since it's slim down there. You are kind of in the corner of the world.

Thank you for the response, I'll definitely look into community colleges and see what i can find. It seems like a lot of the companies I've talked with have had refrigerated trailers to haul so that doesn't seem to be a problem. Judging by the companies that aren't willing to train anyone from Florida I see what you mean. I would think with all the business down in Fl that it would be busy with OTR jobs but I guess not.

Florida is a consumer state. More products going in are consumed than products produced leaving the state... Also it's a road to no where... Nothing passing thru except maybe to the ports.

Consumer state = lots of trucks going in to fight for the little bit of freight coming out = low rates /cheap freight.

Werner is too cheap and Prime is too slow, so I guess KLLM your best choice IMHO.

I've heard good things about Prime. Haven't heard anything about the others.

Look into which schools Crete accepts students from, and go with them.

Best opportunity for new drivers that I've found.

Transport America in my opinion is a good starter company. They have a higher then average starting pay, newer trucks and a nice safety policy. They have a no ask policy if you don't feel safe driving in the snow or something.
