One of my 2012 International Prostars with the Maxxforce 13 and a 10 Speed Ultrashift is skipping gears and getting hung in a gear. When it gets hung in gear, the driver has to pull over and shut the truck down, then start over and it will usually shift. It has to be done a few times per day. We changed out some sensor on the Tranny hoping that would fix it, but no luck. I had a local shop look at it and I was told that the clutch was worn out and it needs to be changed, but the Inertia Clutch (whatever that is) was okay. I priced a new clutch and it was $2,000 just for the Clutch - at several different vendors! Does this sound like a clutch issue? Does this price sound Right? Is there anything else that needs to be done or changed.
It is not the clutch. You need to go to a shop that has, and knows how to use, Service Ranger diagnostic software. Eaton troubleshooting procedure is one of the best, most comprehensive packages available. Cost for clutch is around $1300 or so around these parts.
X2 on quality truck’s comment. If you’re guessing and throwing parts at it- remove and inspect the transmission harness. Loose wires at the starter can give these things fits. Output shaft speed sensor is a common failure. The x-y shifter assembly ( top of the transmission- where the shifter should be) is another common failure. Other than that- it needs input shaft speed sensor (never had a bad one) and a countershaft speed sensor (replaced one once- top of transmission- back drivers corner?) and a good transmission ECU. Never had a bad ECU. Your issue sounds like loose wires or possibly an x-y shifter assembly.
I already changed the XY Shifter and it didn't help. Also changed a Sensor, but I am not sure which one. I will find Diagnose. Thanks
Clutches in these are not normal clutches. They are significantly heavier and do cost more for the part. When the trans has a hard time making a shift because it can't operate the clutch, you will get a clutch mechanical system not responding type of code. Like QT mentioned, I also highly recommend getting it scanned with Service Ranger to see what is going on.
A typical clutch is around $800, the prices I have got on these is nearly 2.5X that at $2,000! I was just curious if this is typical. And I hope that this is the problem. I was told that the clutch is worn out after a visible inspection.
Clutches wear out much faster with automated trans. One thing you can do extend life is to have "creep" mode enabled for forward and reverse. If not, the trans engages and disengages the clutch several times each time you back into a dock or under a trailer.
