This is for experienced drivers that went to Roehl, not drivers trained to drive at Roehl.

I was approved for hire. I have 2 years exp. and flatbed. They told me I would do 3 days oreintation, 2 days ecurement training and the pull a van trailer for 2-3 weeks until they could route me back to Gary, IN to do one more day of securement training. Why do they do this?

Also, how is Roehl? Are theya good company to pull a flatbed for?

Not a driver, but I used to work in flatbed dispatch. Typically the training is done that way so they can make sure you know what you are doing. Often times experienced drivers are not using proper legal securement. I'm also thinking that if you are experienced flatbed that you probably will not need to pull vans for a few weeks, they didn't while I was working there.

As far as how Roehl is, my opinion is quite high. They are going to help you (often times more than you like), coach you, and hold you to high standards. However miles can be shaky, sometimes they're up sometimes they're down. A lot depends on how you like to run and what your home times needs are.

Take my input for what it's worth, and I would thinik it's probably not worth that much. Feel free to ask more questions. I'll answer anything, might not be very timely but I'll get around to it.

I called and asked again about pulling a van for 2-3 weeks, they said it is required of everone until they get the third day of securment training done. Weird I think. But what can ya do?

So you must have driving experience but no previous flatbed experience. If you don't need to get home right away you could ask to be given some short runs for the weekend after orientation is completed and get back to Gary the following Tuesday night. Complete the last day of load securement and then look for a load home, or go home, pick some freight ask to do something local around Gary until you can catch day 3

I do have flatbed experience. I wonder if it is just cause they don't want the 3rd last day to be a Sunday. Who know's right? I figured they wanted three days for experienced flatbedders to ensure you secure their way.

Do you knoiw if they do mostly live loads or hooking into a pre-loaded trailer?

it depends on the slots... they may run you through the securement earlier than that... you may get it right after orientation... just may be up to 2-3 weeks depending on slots

Hmm, times must have changed since I've moved on. when you get to load securement class be sure to let them know that you have flatbed experience. In the past you didn't need day 3, or at least that's how I remember it. Anyways, let us know what you find out.

For flats? pretty much all live. Erdman, L'anse, and Pygmallion-Rolled-cables-of-death over in CT are the only preloads that pop into memory.

I think Pygmalion is something else. But prysmian might be more your style. Very seldom will you see a pre load. That new outfit out of KS was supposed to be pre loaded, but that was shaky at best.
