So....Before I even THINK about getting an ELD, I Have a question that I find pretty simple, And Hopefully I get a simple answer.
Ok, Lets say I have this ELD thing plugged into my diagnostic port-then linked up to my telephone (smartphone) My question is- How do I use it with the kind of operation I do
2 out of 4-5 days I just work Local 30 miles from my Yard..The Other Trips, I tend to travel over 100 miles.....
Do I Just unplug the device from my Port the days I Don't Need it? Because I Don't want to Log it on those days via the ELD- I use the Local exemption log- OR If a friend of mine goes into the City to Pick up a Load-
Again,Keep in mind its around a 30 mile round trip........
Or Days that I maintain the Truck-Or drive the Truck down the Street For Diagnosing mechanical repairs, etc etc etc??? Or Just driving it cause I want to-Without any Commerce?
I'm very Bad at Electronics (Cell phones,Computers,What not) So,Is just unplugging it when im not over 100 miles the way to do it?
Question for the Electronics Savvy- ELD operations

You are overthinking it....
Plug the #### thing in, and simply log your start/stops.
The more you want to separate 100+mile days versus less-than-100miles days, the more you complicate it ---FOR YOURSELF
I did local (30-70 miles, zig-zag, multi-store drops) a few times a week, then 300-450 miles runs out the next...I just logged it as I went along. Kept me sane & Kept track of my HOS (70/14/11/30min) and Kept Trucking.stayinback Thanks this. -
From your description it appears that 60% or so of your work is outside of 100 air mile radius.
Therefore, from my understanding, the local work would also be logged normally on the ELD.
The local exemption only pertains to those whom don't exit that radius.
As far as the OFF DUTY DRIVING.. or PERSONAL CONVEYANCE.. it must be done as unladen, relieved of duty.
There should be an option for off duty driving , or PC, to select , just as you would sleeper or off duty , or other duty status.
Unplugging from the port is likely to show a "gap" in service from the ECM if it records odometer at the time of unplug and then at re-plug.
Some DOT officer may have a field day.
There should have been much more oversight on all of these devices.
This is going to be a nightmare.stayinback, Tb0n3 and nax Thank this. -
That's the thing- I May have another driver go into the city for me if Im tired or whatever,Or If Im busy doing something. So Just Mark OFF DUTY while its still pluigged in?
So,What your saying is.....Once its plugged in, it Should STAY plugged in? I Don't need mileages kept for me,I Have other record keeping paper methods for that. I don't need the ELD to track any reporting anything but HOS
Like I say,Im Not too electronic savvy here, And from what I see from lack of oversight from jammer post, Nothings gonna line up right. -
You'd have to add the other driver on your system account. You'd be off-duty and he would log in as the active driver.tscottme Thanks this.

Keep Trucking has option for multi-drivers.
When you have another driver do the run, they input their driver ID, and that session is logged as their "HOS activity" time.
It also allows different equipment operation and or trailers.
I'm not on Elog (truck age), but Im using the KT app as my HOS tool. It's simple (to me) and gets the job done better than paper trackingtscottme Thanks this. -
Multi account for multi drivers. A user name and password to log in.
When you are DONE for the day.. and leaving the vehicle for someone else to possible use.. LOG OUT.. anything that happens still gets recorded, but not on your status.
When you log back in, if the other driver didn't log in and accept responsibility for the movement (as PC or loggable) then the system will ask YOU about it and do you want to add it to your account.
REJECT IT.
Just don't abuse it to skate the system and you should be fine.
Stop and talk to an enforcement officer in your area about your concerns.
They actually are there to help keep us in the lines if they can.
I understand your concerns. The FMCSA didn't think this through.. it's not a one size fits all.stayinback Thanks this. -
Ah Forget it- I'll Sub my Road Work out then.......not Worth the extra confusion or Risks here.
if I was Able to ONLY use the ELD in OTR situations..Fine,I'd get one.....But If I have to Log ANYTHING and EVERYTHING I do around here .....forget it.
Thanks for the help folks..........jammer910Z and Oxbow Thank this. -
Remember, one of the exemptions is if you are required to log no more than 8 days in 30 you can stay on paper.SAR Thanks this.
