If we knew the answer, we could get rich quick. Freight goes up, freight comes down. Many, many reasons go into the matrix, but it all boils down to supply and demand. That's trucking,it ain't going to change.

Unfortunately the rates have been very bad for the last 4 yrs. They just don't match the rest of our expenses. Which is a result of a lot of foreigners flooding the industry and taking loads they should not be taking. But I guess when you don't pay your bills, taxes, or insurance you can afford to beat the living s*** out of your equipment and pocket the cash. I'm not saying all foreigners do this, but if anyone thinks I'm making this up. They haven't been out there long enough to see this. This combined with new regulation and rising fuel and tolls, strains our ability to make these rates work.

Sorry if I offended anyone. I don't mean you.

The rates will get better when either capacity - the number of available trucks - goes down, or supply - the amount of freight - goes up. Persistent low rates will eventually reduce capacity. What can make supply increase? The question is - do you see anything that will increase supply happening?

well if a lot of these new laws pass that will take a lot of driver jobs away it will get better for the rest of us left the only way to change the rates if 1 we were to all stick together and strike which will never happen or bring the number of trucks and drivers down to create bigger demand that i can see happening

I agree with you, I have seen many foreigners out there but don't quiet know if theyr company or O/O. Regardless, its just outrageous. I do believe it will get better but just not sure when.

Which laws are you referring to? Do you think they will pass? I just wish they gave us O/O's a decent break on Diesel. Its not like surcharge is even playing a role.

    so you are a language?

You really need to look at your opperation. When you are running leased to a carrier with a fixed FSC most can make more money as the fuel goes up. You are leased to someone with a bad FSC or you have an operation that is not getting 6.5 mpg or better. Both need to be fixed to prosper.

This type of thread seems to always pop-up when things slow. And I say the same thing. You need to do the work to build relationships when rates are solid so when rates dip you are getting the loads that never hit the boards. Many companies don't adjust freight rates based on supply and demand effects. But because less is being shipped the carriers that have developed relationships when things are good those carriers are getting the phone call.

Afraid of little competition? Makes you wonder what all the ancestors of native Indians think about the trucking industry. Some people are a few years or second generation citisens themselves and already get a snobbish attitide towards newcomers. Or cheerful when crops are left behind in the fields after illegal aliens flee the state because of recent changes in immigration laws enforcement. Driving a Pete and living in New Jersey do not help.
