So I've been running across I 80 in western Nevada lately and I've noticed that on some of the 7000ft pulls that my rear differential temperature has gotten up to 250 degrees and it's not particularly hot out yet. It's in the 80's today.
I know there's synthetic in the rears. The oil has about 280000 mi on it.
Whats the absolute high end of hot before I blow up something?
Why would it be running so hot? I was driving about 75 all day long so I'm sure that doesn't help Temps.
Any ideas?
I only made the light come on for high rear axle temperature one time about a year ago going up to Vegas on that long long grade and it was crazy hot out.
Thank you!

If it keeps going up with out stopping or you notice abnormal vibration then I'd worry. Just make sure it's full and the grease is clean.

I run across the AZ desert, the hottest mine get is 200 deg.
wore out Thanks this. -
What temp is the front diff? You heavy?
I used to change my diffs 300,000. synthetic, but I know many go further.77fib77 Thanks this. -
Last week 40 mile one way runs hilly terrain averaging 70mph 80 degree humid temps. 73k pounds
I averaged around 125 degrees on the rears. Front diff runs a little hotter than the rear on my truckTug Toy Thanks this. -
I've seen my rear go to 270ish going up 17 in July / mid day.
The front wouldn't go much past 225.
I also used to wonder about that, at what temp does the heat transfer down the axles and explode the tires lol.77fib77 Thanks this. -
I'm running about 210-220 on front driver and the rear hit 250 going up some pretty big 7000 ft mountains today.
I'm maxed 80000 and pulling a tanker. I'm thinking that all the liquid pulling to the rear could also put quite a strain on it too.
I just had the oil checked in both rears so I know it's good.
Thank you -
The tractor is 2 years old with 280000 miles on it. It's a Peterbilt 579.

Check it with a heat gun too. Might not be dead on accurate but it'll tell you if its close. On mine the front diff ran hotter. I always assumed it was because the power divider being in there. Never got that hot though.

How’s the color of the fluid. Does it smell burnt?
