I'll finish CDL school here in MN in mid May and have pre-hire from Roehl. Looking at pay reefer pays a couple pennies more. What's the difference between them? A few cents more is meaningless if you're spending more time sitting (or unloading). Does Roehl have any tankers? I will have all the endorsements needed for anything. I'd like to hear about drop and hook, load and unload, etc. Your experience is most appreciated. Thank you!
Reefer or Van?

I would say dry van is better than reefer.
I don't think reefer does very much drop & hook
A lot of live load and unload at grocery whse's
In the same respect dry van can be the same, only
More drop and hooks, relays to terminals drop yards.
A lot is going to depend where you will be based out of and
And being close to major freight lanes. Hope this helps, good luck to you !grusco Thanks this. -
reefer is a lot of sitting and waiting at grocery warehouses lots of multidrops too.....van yeah we can sit at the same places time to time we do a lot of drop and hooks and I have yet to fingerprint a load at all....so it depends on what you want...
grusco and notezbngrn71 Thank this. -
my suggestion, based on what you posted, is that several have covered the relevant facts so it you have enough scratch($) to do school then really the place to hire out at is anyplace that will hire you but for sanity it is better to interview in multiple places, possibly as many as you can find, then walk on any that try to pressure you - or the inverse of too much softie really cool & nice - then just pick one from whatever is left ~ at that point there is really no way to know without time in a particular industry

Do Van, when i did van I made as much as the flat drivers, its the only way to go. Just hope you get a good truck and can catch on easy.
grusco Thanks this. -
I didn't do a lot of multistop loads when I was doing reefer. The hours can suck pretty bad though.
grusco Thanks this. -
Do you Reefer drivers have any long hauls? Is it usually multi-drops (which would be ltl, sort of)?
For Van drivers: Long hauls? Are you doing drop and hook?
Thanks! -
I don't know but I am about to find out....I am trying reefer for a week to see if I like it...which I probably will...then I will switch to the reefer fleet permantly....if I do make the switch I probably will start a thread similar to tanks....cause there is an abundance of van and flat info not so much on the reefer side...

All the late night, early morning live loads and unloads on the refer fleet would drive me batty!

it will really depend on who you work for.
Some have weird hours, some don't. 95% of my stuff is all day time appointments. Have some early evening stuff. But that is rare.
Otherwise, I drive during the day and sleep during the night. Most times I am parked by 8:30 PM.
