It depends on how the trainer behaves. Many trainers are just some random truck driver that hasn't had an accident/incident in last X number of days that the company pays some extra money and call a trainer. Some trainers have decades of experience and supervise the most critical parts of the trip to evaluate how the newbie is performing. At least one megafleet pairs a newbie with no experience with another newbie that has 2-4 weeks more experience than zero. IMO, there are a thousand things a prospective employee needs to know about a company before choosing where to work. The training situation is one of those things. Everyone makes their own decision. Unlike almost every other job outside of the truck newbies are, depending where they go to work, not told exactly what to do and how to do and when to do everything. Other companies probably have a procedure and Qualcomm macro for every situation. Pick your poison.
My trainer had me do everything, saying “you won’t learn anything if you don’t do it!” I’m still grateful, I was a lot more ready to drive solo after two weeks of that.
@Labrador, Roehl's "Relaunch" program, might be a good match for you--you can check it out, by scrolling/finding it on the following page: Roehl Transport Truck Driving Jobs & CDL Training | Roehl.Jobs They may (or may not) have opportunities for that in your area, where you can get the training you need without having to pay for it out-of-pocket. NOTE: I don't drive for Roehl, haven't driven previously for Roehl, and am not a recruiter (for anybody). --Lual
sorry to jump in guys, I've been out of the truck for about 31/2 months, going to school, taking care of my son etc. Do I have to do anything crazy to get back in with swift/schneider? they're easy gigs and I'm not chasing a paycheck, also I have a year and a half experience. ( DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO ORIENTATION )
You still living in Oregon? If so, which city/town are you near? What type job do you prefer? Local/OTR
Orientation is for every driver, regardless of the company. Swift has turned to dog crap under Knight's control. Schneider...up to the individual. Check with Landair, etc. Also depends on where you live as to options.
