I know I asked this question in many threads but this is so important let's dedicate one thread to this question and talk about this. Especially Car Carriers need to know clear answer.
When you register your car and get apportioned plates.( IRP)
What is the weight you should indicate during registration.
Here is problem and dilemma situation.
1. Dodge Ram 5500 crew cab, 84", 4.1 Axle ratio manual says 19 500 pounds as GVWR. Which I assume means if I used my Dodge Ram as construction vehicle witouth any trailer I could be 19 500 maximum.
HOWEVER Dodge rates 5500 4.1 axle ratio GCVWR as 26 000 (Ram 5500 with 4.88 axle ratio is rated at 37 500) GCVWR is I guess how much vehicle can be including trailer. 26 000 is very low for Ram 5500. So Is 26 000 as law and I cannot register my total weight at IRP more than 26 000? Or DOT does not pay attention at GCVWR (somebody was posting in other thread that DOT does not care to GCVWR)
For my hauling needs. I need to register this vehicle as at 37 000. So will I able to do it? Is it legal?
2. Trailer GVWR is 18 000 and I can ask manufacturer to boost it to 20 000 because I used heavy duty mesh.
SO Dodge Ram GVWR IS 19500 AND TRAILER IS 18 000. I WANT TO REGISTER IT AS SUM OF THIS TWO AMOUNTS. I WANT TO INDICATE IN REGISTRATION APPLICATION THAT I WILL BE HAULING 37500.
WILL I HAVE PROBLEMS?
DOES NOT DOT ONLY CARE WHAT ARE LOADS ON INDIVIDUAL AXLES? AND BY AXLES RAM 5500 IS REALLY GOOD OPTION UNLIKE 3500 (WHICH FOR SOME REASON DODGE GIVES 32 000 GCVWR WTF????)
ARE THERE CAR HAULERS WHO HAS RAM 5500 WITH AXLE 4.1 RATIO AND THEIR GCVWR IS OVER 30K??
THANKS FOR ANSWERS IN ADVANCE

We haven't had any problem plating our trucks higher than GVWR. A lot of these things are still a mystery to me so I'm watching to see who chimes in here.

IF DOT checks my GVWR I am good. Truck GVWR is 19500 and Trailer 18 000 (I can even ask them to boost it by 2000)
So my overall GVWR is 37500.
What is mystery is why Dodge Ram rated 5500 with 4.1 axle ratio GCVWR 26 000
If DOT tells me Ram 5500 GCVWR is not compatible to my registered weight (I am going to register at 37500) that is situation where I am unapologetically ##**ed -

The fact is, I could not find anything about this on official DOT website
and I am looking for people who have registered this way and are hauling without problems -
Forum helped me a lot why I chose 5500 and not 3500, why low profile wedge and not goose neck.
so why I cannot find reasonable answer to my questions.
It would be horrible decision hauling with 3500 and goose neck trailer -
Just got off the phone call with DOT rep.
she said DOT is looking are GVWR
I made my question more specific, explained that Power unit GVWR is 19500 and Trailer 18 000, so will DOT be looking at Sum of these two and she confirmed.
I do not know how qualified she was about it (I am always having trouble with phone reps qualifications) this was her answer
Then to make sure I asked, are you checking GVWR or GCVWR, She said GVWR
So this is what it is -
Have you called JJ Keller yet? Or the Connecticut Trucking Assn.?
-
Yes i ordered driver package from them
Also they bait explained me good stuff regarding EDL where is coming from the end of this year -
I have been doing this for over two decades, take my word for it when I say that you will NEVER get a really concise, constant, or straightforward answer when dealing over the phone with most DOT agency's, in fact, you will almost never get the same answer to the same question on the same day if you get two different people on the phone! lolToomanybikes, dan31186, NuCar Carrier and 2 others Thank this.
