You don't buy any if the company supplies the apportioned plates as you said. They will guide you thru the process. However, they may deduct the cost from your settlements.

AND, they will own the tag and base plate. If you leave, you get to hand over the tag they deducted the cost for. Before I let them do the tag, I'd find out who's going to own it and who's going to pay for it.
I could get the tags through the company I'm leased to for 2200 bucks, or get them myself through my state and it was only 1100. Plus, I own the base plate. If I leave, I just need to call them and have it updated appropriately. Guess which option I chose?

Not too sure about your state, but here, you can just transfer the title, I think. It's been a long time since I did it.
We also have what's called a "parking tag" that costs around 25 bucks, if I remember right, that lets you drive the truck around but not pull a trailer or work it. YOu might see if your state has something like that.
Best thing to do is call the state and ask them what you need to do, probably. It's probably not too complicated. I'm sure folks have to deal with it all the time and they've seen it before. -
Yeah, on my last truck, I started out in Az. with Az. title and base plate. I ended up with Az. title and In. plate bought thru the carrier I was leased to.

Here in MN, you cant transfer a title on a CMV with out registration. Well you can, but the state will hold your title until you show proof its registered. All I do is get the companies previous year mileage % summary that they fill out when they renew their plates. That showed proof of registration and also it saved me a #### load of money on sales tax. Im leased to a PA company with IN plates, MN looked at their mileage they ran in MN in 2009 and based my sales tax on that. I payed 36 bucks for sales tax.... about 500$ less than I would have doing it on my own...

Here in Oklahoma if I buy a truck I just go to the local tag office and transfer the title over into my name and in about three days I have a new title and I think it cost $35. Then I go to OKC to the state office that handles the apportion tags and do the registration process which takes about a week sometimes and I will get a tag and a cab card. On the cab card it will show me as the registrant and the owner and the cost was around $1500. If I go threw the company it will show their name on the cab card as registrant and me as the owner. If you have the money and they will let you get your own tag unless the company pays for the tag and no cost to you. I know some company's you lease to won't let you get your own tag they want you to run under their's for some reason.

if you can get your own tag that is a write off tho right?

just tranfer the title, no plates. And hope you don't live in a state like CA who wn;t tranfer a title without you buying plates. I'm sure you don't though
