I have a 389 with a cat 3406e 2ws which is straight piped, I’m looking to quiet it down and would like some advice on whether a muffler or a resonator would be best. I’m looking for the most noise cancellation I can get. Thanks, stay safe out there.
Resonator or muffler?

A muffler will be quite a bit quieter than a resonator.
Donaldson has specs in their books. Probably online too.Bean Jr. and Muskyman734 Thank this. -
Mufflers will make it quietest, IMO a resonator makes them sound really good, still a nice rumble, just no bark. And with a resonator, you can keep you straight pipes to look at. Or, I have a set of OEM mufflers I’ll swap you even up for those 8 inchBean Jr., 01HFT and Muskyman734 Thank this.

If you’re straight piped on a 3406E and you want the most noise knockdown, a muffler is gonna do way more than a resonator. A resonator is basically a “tone changer It’ll take some of the bark and cab drone out, but it’s not gonna make a straight pipe magically quiet. Resonator more frequency changer than actual loudness.Muskyman734 Thanks this.

If you go the resonator route, make sure it’s straight thru, no baffle in the middle. The baffle will create back pressure and you’ll feel it. You can probably fit a standard muffler underneath, might have to cut off about an 1” on each end to fit. You should measure first. If it doesn’t fit, they make “Shorty” muffler that will fit, again, make sure if it has a baffle, drill holes thru it, or whatever it takes so there’s no back pressure.
Muskyman734 Thanks this.
