Roll off can pay pretty well. In my area it only starts at 13-14hr, but you can work up to 19/hr over a few years. It's solid hours, normally 50-55hrs a week. I have a friend who makes about 65k a year with a mixture of front load and roll off, normally works 0300-1500 mon-fri, and 1 Saturday a month.

I was in your boat a year ago.

I did my training OTR then found a local roll-back job that also had a big truck and trailer. Then did roll-off for a month.

Quit that bc pay was not there. Went OTR with Watkins Shepard for 4 months until I could get a local job pulling a 53'.

I can confirm that companies do NOT count class B experience for class A work.

I have a family too. It sucks, but put in as much OTR time as you can. Then look for local class A work.

    Good luck

This is true for the most part, but if your goal is LTL work you will need tractor-trailer experience before they will consider you. If you have a year or more of Class B experience, you will almost certainly fail a road test at an LTL company. You will forget how to back a trailer into a dock if you don't ever really get to practice the skill. Class B experience doesn't count toward that practice which you will certainly need in order to get a job running around town backing into 20+ docks per day in difficult situations. Also, it's better to make your mistakes at Schneider than make them at a good LTL job and get fired. Go out there and tear some stuff up in a big orange truck!

The alternative would be to work for a roll-off company that also had Class A rigs for the big dumpsters. A company like that might give you a shot at running a semi after you learn the ropes in the Class B truck.

Thanks for the replies and advice guys. I went with rolloff for one month (pushed out Schneider orientation) to see if it fits and if I even like the work. Wanna be happy! Like my father always said, be happy won't ever work a day in your life.
