Hi folks,
I have a class 6 International that is subject to DOT inspections. I have some rust pitting on the frame in the web part (not flange). Right around the spring hangars. Is there a regulation about how much is acceptable before the frame won't pass inspection? Can I fill in the pits with bondo or is weld the only way?
Rust Pitting on class 6 frame.

Post a pic if you can. It may not be as bad as you think

Don't take what I say to the bank, but I'm pretty sure if there isn't any cracks, your ok. I've got to believe cracked frame rails are a DOT violation. I'd only weld frames if needed.

I inserted a few pics, they kind of stitched together I guess. They went in backwards of how I intended. Anyway, the top one is close up that shows how deep the pitting is in that spot. The middle one is similar, just a little farther away, and the bottom one is from the side. That almost vertical line on the bottom one is where the frame doubler ended. There's rust there, too but not nearly as bad as this spot. I'm not real worried about the frame cracking, I run at only about 15K, not much more and I almost never tow. Straight mechanic's truck. It's going to have an easy life here on out. I'm really only concerned about DOT. -
That's about how bad my class 8 Freightliner Century is, and never had it brought up during an inspection.
wlhequipment Thanks this. -
That's the front hangar. The rear isn't much better... -
I can't say about state inspection standards. But I wouldn't worry about federal standards. Maybe just put a coat of black Rust-Oleum lol?

Couple coats of POR-15 maybe?
