A quick question to all that try to exercise on the road.

Has anyone taken up sandbag training while on the road?

If so, how well has it gone, and what type of program did you incorporate?

I'm going to switch to sandbag training for when on the road, and was just wondering if others have tried it.

Of course, without an Army/Navy Surplus store near me, it's proving hard to find canvas duffel bags, but that's a whole different story.

Get a heavy canvas bag(so, a military duffel bag works well), get smaller bags that you can fill with sand, and get sand. Fill smaller bags and secure them so that they don't open. Put them inside the duffel bag, close the duffel bag. Now, use the duffel bag for your training. Lifts from the ground. Clean and press. Front squats. Zercher squats. Grip training. You can find lots of stuff on this type of training at http://zacheven-esh.com/blog/

Dumbells work fine for me, but then I'm a lady trucker and don't need as much weight to get a good workout. I've always wondered how all ya men can carry enough weights in your truck without causing overweight issues when hauling a heavy load.

I carry a set of dumbbells, jump rope, and running shoes. I can usually get in a good workout at least 3 times a week.

This would be a huge waste of time and space on your truck. You don't need much to get a workout. I am on a Green Beret base. All in great condition. They have a weight room but many only do many chin/pullups. Some with 45lb plate between legs. You can do 25 and you don't need any sandbags. Same with dips, pushups, etc. Gyms are great, but if you want a workout you can easily get one. Jump rope mentioned above is timeless.
Storage on most rigs is very limited. And hauling a lot of weight cuts down on room for money making freight.

If carrying 200-300 lbs of weights is a problem with freight loads, then run less fuel, or a lighter truck. Just my opinion. For me, I run Canada only, so I never have problems, as we're allowed a lot more weight than the US.

You have your opinion, and I have mine. When in a truck, unless you have something made special for doing pullups, you're not doing them. Also, bodyweight exercises are great until you can do them easily. Then, they lose their usefulness, and you need to add weight. The body will adapt, and then stop compensating by increasing muscle and strength. As for storage being limited, as I said in my last post, if you can't bring 200-300 lbs of stuff with you, drive a lighter truck or put in less fuel.

Also, you're never going to get a great lower body or lower back workout with some sort of extra weight added to exercises like squats, lunges, good mornings, etc. Dips, pullups, etc are great for your upper body, but if you ignore your lower body you'll look like a #### light bulb, and not have any great strength throughout your body.

Come tell these Special Forces and SEALS that. You will get an argument. And you will find few in better shape on the planet. You can do anything with what is at hand if you are willing. If you like your sand bags by all means continue. Different strokes for different folks.
