I posted this in another thread, but I also wanted advice from experienced folks...
I looked into going OTR for the last few years, looked into schools and getting my CDL through one of the Mega companies.
I have heard horror story after horror story about the mega companies and even though it seems like a scam, the price of their training for a CDL is the close to the same as most of the schools in my area.
I had a thought about getting hired onto one of these companies and getting my CDL, if the company is somewhat decent, stay on for a year and then move up to better companies.
If the company has lied to me, or doesn't live up to their promises, just take my CDL and go to another company. I still pay the balance of the course (and most likely renegotiate the amount owed while having easy, monthly payments). I don't see the difference except going with a mega will not cause me to hand over a large amount of cash that I would rather keep on hand.
I would like to hear what the downside of this would be? Would I be able to get hired by another company after doing this? Is there something else I'm not seeing
Scamming the scammers?

The downside of it would be your in a lose lose situation no matter what you do. Because the money just won't be there. Your only option is to stay the year.
You have no idea what your getting in to. So, to think you'll have a plan and that's the way it'll be. Well, It just don't happen.Toomanybikes, susitna1 and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
Well, I know the first year is going to suck either way. The difference is if I don't spend the money on CDL school and have a mega train me, I can keep that cash on hand in case things get tight. If things go real bad and I quit, I'd still have to pay back the training, but it would be in installments and I could most likely renegotiate for a smaller amount.

Will be best to stick it out with the company that gets you your cdl. All companies are going to be paying you around the same when you are first starting out. Prime probably has the highest average pay for beginners from what I hear, but have never driven for them myself.
Imagine you get your cdl from Werner or wherever then immediately ditch them because you are only making five hundred dollars each week. Now you owe several thousand that collectors are calling you about. You are hunting for a job with a high paying company with only a few weeks experience.
I went through the biggest scammer of them all according to all the stories you read on the internet but was able to make it work out fine. Got my cdl through cr england. Did a total of six months starting the day I got my license, was barely enough time to even learn to shift gears smoothly and then was free and clear to move onto another company that averaged me $1500 a week gross. -
O/P, don't forget . . . many (if not all) megas (and even sub-megas) pull your credit report. THAT WILL APPEAR, jsyk. You dipping owing a company for their training is not going to look favorable in their eyes, no matter HOW big and rich they are.
There are SO MANY threads on here about this; just switch up the words and search, ye shall find. It's not advisable, at ALL. Unless you can cough up the $$ when you bail with the "first" mega. Did you try the WIA grant from the gov't? I don't know much about it, but have read briefly here and there. Google that. Before you end your career you haven't begun.

I only paid 2900 for my school, but if you could get a pre hire with a company they would do financing. Most of the megas will do tuition reimbursement for you, so you could end up with nothing out of pocket and no contact. Also less money to pony up if things go south. Just something to consider.

I'm not worried about the credit report. Or having them come after me If I chose to quit. Ideally, I would get trained by a mega, tolerate it for a year and then move on. By keeping my money in the bank, I have options in case things go bad. Judging from the horror stories I have read on here, I think that's a good idea.
If the mega company and I part ways, I would owe less on the training than I would if I paid for private CDL school. I can pay it off and move on, or set up a repayment plan. That wouldn't go on my credit because the account wouldn't be in default.
If I pay for the school up front, I have less of a cushion to fall back on.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
I would love to pay 2900. for school, most schools here charge 5-7 grand and I have heard mixed reviews on all of them. The pre hire and financing sounds great and is something I will look into. - Thanks!

If you tolerate it for a year, wouldn't you be "even?" ie: paid off??? Not sure, just think i've read that a time or so. And yes, you are correct; not in default = no negative credit reporting (hopefully.) Could get pricey, though. No WIA available where you are?

I wouldn't qualify, I retired from one career and started another one and I hate it. Trucking has been something I wanted to do since I was a kid and I'm at an age where I can be away from home. I'm just throwing this idea out to find the downsides.
G13Tomcat Thanks this.
