    Hi All!!

I'm a new driver with no prior experience and have my A license and twic, haz, trp/dbls, and tank endorsements. I'm currently on active duty but will be discharged in June. So, I'm in the process of applying to companies right now. I have an offer from TMC, and I've actually had my sights set on them since I rec'd my license back in 2016. However, I'm also considering going tanker since the pay is also good for tanker work. I hear Schneider has a good training program and you can make pretty decent money as a new driver starting out.

For the guys that have time otr and time in the business, which route would you take? Flatbed or tanker?? Trucking is going to be my career for the next 25-30 years, so I'm looking for which path has the most upside as far as income and longevity goes. Home time might also come into play, but not for at least another 2 or 3 years from now. For now, I'm comfortable going out regional or otr, and hopefully making it back home 1 or 2 weekends a month.

Thanks guys!! I've been following the boards here for quite a while now and there's some good info on here!! Looking forward the beginning of my trucking journey!!

Haven't changed my mind since we chatted a year ago; tankers or line haul.

Thanks, Chinatown. I'm going to run out of NJ. Do you think Schneider tanker would be a good move? Any other companies you'd recommend?

Edit: I just looked up the old posts from 2017. I think I'll throw apps in to the companies you had recommended. Trimac, etc.

Schneider Bulk is a good place to start. Negative posts about their tanker division are rare; in fact I don't recall reading any.
Trimac Transportation is also a good place to start. I think they have a terminal in Trenton and some other place in New Jersey. If you run the system "OTR" it may not matter where the terminals are.
@ethos used to work for Trimac and he also worked for Schneider Bulk.

Estes Express is as good a line haul company as there is and they have terminals in New Jersey. They also have started their own driver school for people that either don't have a cdl or have less than one year experience. Those line haul jobs are premium/cherished jobs.
"Join Estes Today and Be Trained as a Driver! Must currently possess a Class A CDL or have a valid drivers’ license and willing to obtain a CDL Learner’s Permit when notified he/she has been accepted to driving school."

Old Dominion is also right up there with Estes Express and has a similar program at certain terminals.

One new cdl grad in another state recently got on with a tanker outfit and his best week was $1,900.00 which is nothing to cry about!

I'm a newbie as well. I had my final interview with Trimac yesterday. There will be three days of orientation outside of Atlanta and then mentor training for 2-5 weeks. The quicker you progress in training the faster you get your truck. A safety officer has to sign off before you go solo.

Unfortunately, there are no driver-trainers assigned to my terminal so I'll have to spend that time in Memphis. Not what I was hoping for but a small price to pay. I understand that Trimac's driver-trainers are absolutely top notch so I really don't care where I have to go in order to take advantage of their experience and training.

I learned a couple interesting facts yesterday. Practically all work from my terminal is dedicated. Product is some nasty, flammable chemical used in industrial coatings/paints. Can't begin to even spell the name. And their tanks are all smooth bore... interesting.

Congrats on the hire! Smooth bore, ####, keep it cool out there on the road! Will they have you hooking up hoses and all for offload, or is that something they'll do at the terminal?

Wow, that's some good money. My goal starting out is to clear $1k a week. Anything over that is gravy. Do you remember which outfit that newbie was with?

W.W. Transport - don't know if they have tankers on the eastern seaboard, but they do have a reefer division there that they claim is mostly drop & hook loads.
Don't worry, you'll be "taking home" over a thousand a week easily.

All loading by the manufacturer and all offloading by the driver.
