Hired for bulk tanker division in CA. First got on with no training on deliveries and routes. Just sent me to the railyard to pick up certain chasis and trailers. I hit the ground blind and went through hell to figure things out. Never quit. Finally started getting the hang of it.

Then they wanted me to park a tank in a certain spot that had barely any room to back into. It's 2am pitch black. I backed up and ding a trailer next to me. Small damage to the metal wheel guard fender. Goes on my record as an accident 3 weeks later.

Since then there's been many crazy days in which their equipment was malfunctioning and just causing whole work days of pure stress. I neve quit and just fought through it all. Never hear a word from management.

Now I'm about 2 months after the little backing incident. Somehow I hooked to a chasis and the king pin went into the handle of the 5th wheel release arm. Causing it to bend. Was gonna take it to repair shop to fix it the next day. But my driver leader tells me she scheduled extra training for me because of the little backing incident from 2 months ago.

The trainer comes in from Houston and notices my 5th wheel release arm. He says I high hooked and now I have to call accidents.

I call accidents and now it's a whole big deal.

Safety department, my driver leader and another higher up all on a conference call letting me know it's a serious offense and asking for details.

I hung up the phone. Didn't finish the discussion. Figured I'd be fired anyways. It's technically 2 accidents on my record already and I've only been driving for 4 months.

So I hung up and said "F em"

The good news is I've read that those accidents are not recordable on my DOT record.

But it still sucks big time to have no income for however long it takes to find another job.

So I'm back to looking for another job.

I wouldn't worry about it. There are do many driving jobs out there you will be working in no time.

You shouldn't have too much of a problem finding another job. But the fact is, you did damage a trailer. Because it was dark? And you did bend the 5th wheel release handle. Somehow? Stop with the excuses, own your mistakes, and concentrate on being more careful in these situations.

One of my co-workers “somehow” bent the 5th wheel release arm. A few weeks later I had to ride with him for an unrelated incident and it quickly became obvious how the release arm got damaged. Our shop replaced the arm when his truck was scheduled for routine maintenance and the driver still has his job.

You might could have kept your job had you listened to what the higher-ups were telling you on the phone, taken the butt-chewing and not hung up.

You will find another job without much delay but you’re going to need to be more careful, start paying attention, and own your mistakes when they happen. Yes, the mistakes will happen, how you handle it makes all the difference in the world.

Exactly right. A person's attitude toward what he's done is important. Most companies would figure a guy learned his lesson and after a little butt chewing...which he deserved...would let him stay on. If he showed a smart alec demeanor, probably not.
When I first started I made my share of dumb mistakes. I got chewed on too. It didn't kill me.

Single Wide Drives (in '19) Threw Me Off Centering 5th Wheel Until I "got The Hang Of Single Wides. I Was "Lining Up" Driver Side, Like With A "Normal" Tractor, Yet Didn't Touch The 5th Release.
Other "Fun" Was Jumping 5th Wheel With A Loaded Heavy Trailer.

A few years back we had to let a driver go because she did just that without getting out and looking to make sure the trailer wasn’t too high. When she jumped the 5th wheel the kingpin was sheared off, rendering the trailer OOS- and it was a brand new trailer at the time!

    Sounds like a defective kingpin

y’all fired a driver for ONE minor incident ?
That didn’t involve other vehicles or the police ?

no wonder every company is begging for drivers .
And no wonder every driver tries to cover up any incident .
