So I started school yesterday, and they threw us right into it soon after finishing paperwork and short talk. It was awful. Cold and rained all day, and our teacher for the group is a perfectionist. I think he may have forgotten it's all of our first time driving a truck, and for some of us, our first manual. But what a difference a day makes! We've been practicing straight backs since yesterday, and in cab pre trip and outside pre trip around the engine bay and 5th wheel. We all improved so much and kept at it today. I have a bit more confidence as we go, and am seeing that our teacher just wants the best out of us after talking to a couple other students that's about to test out, and let's you know your mistake but also let's you know how good you've done after correcting it.
Oh and I'm getting sick from being out in the cold rain yesterday, all day. So it's going swell but I don't want to miss a day or two. I'm also trying not to let my vertical challengeness defeat me with the clutch![]()

Instructor is doing you a favor.
Coddling only makes for soft, whiny, spoiled little steering wheel holders.
We need polished operators that'll not shy away from the grit and grime of the real industry.
If he pushed you through with kid gloves, you'd get a real smack in the face when you get out here. None of us will cut you any slack.
That said.. when you have questions... that's what we're here for.
Plenty of old hands on here that'll help you when you have a question.
Don't be afraid to ask.
DO be afraid to screw up because you didn't ask.
I challenge you to finish #1 in your class.QuietStorm, Ybnormal, Zappafan and 10 others Thank this. -
Trucking never stops, 24/7/365. If trucking stopped because the weather turned, people would starve. Trucking is one of the most important industries in the USA, it's just unfortunate more people don't understand that. Soldier on and do well!!!
Ybnormal, Gin86, MidwestResident and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks everyone! I will definitely ask questions as they come and the more I learn.

seriously, bring rain gear, waterproof boots as well. be careful as to how many days you are absent. some schools have a max limit, or else you have to make up those days, and NOT get your appointment at the DMV for your road and skills testing, until you make up that time....!!!

Ok, in need of some advice if anyone has any idea on what to do. I'm 5'1, 5'2 and I'm not sure how I'll be able to do the road portion. Here's why: with me so short I have to scoot the seat all the way up, steering wheel pretty much against me. My left foot sits under the clutch, so I have to pick it up and over the clutch to use it. Obviously I can't do this through all 10 gears on city streets or I'll have to cut my leg off from the pain of holding it up that long.
My teacher suggested a pillow behind my back, but I'm afraid since my legs are so short it really won't make a difference. Any ideas?
