Any thoughts on self driving trucks? Are you guys/gals worried they'll bring down our pay or render us truckers obsolete? OTTO is a self driving truck who has already delivered it's first load.

There are reasons besides the limitations that this will not happen in my lifetime.

You might as well get in line about this. There are dozens if not hundreds of posts about this good and bad.

I don't care for them. If the industry thinks they can buy a whole fleet of them and dispose of hiring drivers for them they will get into a world of hurt when computers fail. sure you can do it it's been done already. But not before the route is mapped down to the limits of precision and under police escort to keep crazy cars and trucks away. You can cause a computer truck to wreck by presenting to it a situation that is impossible choice.

There will always be a need for drivers. But if the quality continues to worsen and decline, dont be surprised if a carrier decides to spend millions on self driving trucks. We would have only ourselves to blame.

Life changes nothing remains the same. Sometimes a particular work becomes obselete and no longer a valid form of making a living.

I don't care for them. But it is pretty amazing when you consider what it takes for a computer to get a big rig across Hoover Dam for example as already been done. It had a human that assisted the computer to work around some of the rocks that are in the way. I understand they built and finished a large bridge above and downstream from Hoover so that if it should fail the link between NV and AZ wont be broken.

Have you flown recently? This planes are flying themselves, they can even take off and land, yet there are pilots aboard.

If I understand it correctly, those trucks would only self drive on the Interstates and a driver would need to take control to run the surface streets. I could be wrong though.

The Tesla car that could not tell the difference between a truck and the sky had a driver. He is dead now because he was not alert enough to take over. With self driving Ving trucks the skill level will fall even more because of the lack of time behind the wheel actually controlling the vehicle.

People are pushing this based on perceived safety when it will actually go down. The truck cannot determine what the guy sitting at the crossroads will do or that elk on the shoulder.

I don't think anyone can determine what an elk is going to do :)

Self driving trucks would save companies on fuel. If the trucks do most of the driving they might want to cut the drivers pay.
