Takes me a few to get used to it every time I switch vehicles. Unless they are identical and even then there's minor differences. I try to move the truck with skid loader controls and try to shift the skid loader.

Oh ya i agree.I can switch from a 10-18-15 or what ever and i have to go through the entire shift patter before i feel comfortable in it again. But like i said i meant nothing mean or rude or anything by that comment before,it was a 100% kidding, joking around reply.

I hate to disagree with the numerical shift program, but it doesn't account for different rear end ratios, tire size, and what the final overdrive ratio is. Any of those items can change your engine rpm relative to road speed.

Also different engines. You'll just have to drive the truck and shift it where it feels right. Not to hard. Get to worrying about numbers to much and you'll just confuse yourself.

I had an instructor that taught us to get through gears 3, 4, 5 and 6 quickly without winding the RPM's up too much, then put your foot to the floor in 7th and 8th to really get speed up. Progressive shifting, it worked nice on level ground. Except with the full smooth bore tank lol. -
Its a general rule of thumb and is usually accurate within a few mph's. And I haven't drove a 10 in awhile, I run 13 speeds. -
This method has always worked out for me, and I have driven Governed and non governed trucks with this method. Although rpm range is different with every truck, with my current truck that is governed at 65. It is a International 9400 with a Cummings, I usually shift at around 1300 to almost 1500.
When I was driving a non governed Detroit diesel International, I shifted at around 1500 to 1600, but like I said it varies with every truck. Just find out what the baby likes... -
trucker lloyd Thanks this.
