I remember back in 2008 when I was getting my CDL, the instructors at the driving school, were advertising some kind of device - when installed on a semi truck, will show the exact gear to shift in, according to the engine RPM and the current speed of the truck. This will help a lot to a new driver, but I was not interested back then and can't remember the brand or the name of this device.
Now I have to hire a driver for one of my trucks and I think this is going to be a big help in the city.
Does anyone remember the name of this thing?
Thank you!

Wouldn't it just be simpler to hire a driver who knows how to shift?
Tonythetruckerdude, Giggles the Original, Lepton1 and 13 others Thank this. -
Keep in mind the driver will be more focused on that device then his surroundings.
Hammer166 Thanks this. -
Automatic transmission is the name.

This will help the new driver shift like he is driving an auto and the owner of the truck will have more simple and reliable transmission.

Even experienced driver could have problems shifting in the city, if someone cut him off and after hard braking...
This device has display mounted on your dash - similar to the displays of EATON Smart Shift and Ultra Shift, showing you the current gear. The "Right Gear" device will show on the display, what gear to shift in any given moment without any grinding noise and etc. You will shift like hot knife in butter, without clutch.... in any situation - according to their ad from 2008..... On the hills will help you decide what gear to use and when to shift for better MPG
This leads to less stress of the drivetrain and less repairs..Last edited: Jan 5, 2015

or just know what gear your in. or stop and start over in 2nd if you have to stop then so be it. If traffic is moving fast enough anyways you can find a gear still rolling

This thing has been around for decades. It's called "experience". Even if you have some hi tech gizmo that tells you what gear you should be going for, doesn't guarantee that you'll be able to shift smoothly. It's a function of the sound of your engine, a feel for your road speed,(both of which you get without focusing somewhere on the dash so that your eyes are on the road instead of not). It comes with time and practice. I'm not trying to belittle you or your idea, if you can find this amazing device and it helps you, so be it. It's just hard for us old skoolers to think of something like this, when we learned the only way there was, the hard way.
HighCountry, Tmtbob, Hammer166 and 5 others Thank this. -
I saw something like this on the Simpson's once, only the truck drove itself when engaged

I like my Volvo I shift because it puts the transmission in the right gear and allows me to focus on more important things while driving, like hot chicks with big thingies.
