So... do you have a preference on the brand of slacks? I have 2 on trailer I just bought that won’t hold adjustment. I’m going to change all 6 (3 axle). I like how the meritors adjust but I’ve heard some negatives about durability. What’s your opinion?

I just put all brand new haldex self adjusting on my truck all the way around. Took me a few hours but got it done. That’s what the truck had from the factory. I’ll tell you what. She stops on a dime and holds adjustment. I figured at the same time while everything was apart, I threw in new scam bushings closest to the the slack adjusters and new brake chambers. So maybe that’s why it stops so good.
Did you check your s cam for play? Slack adjuster won’t work if you have play on the cam shaft which I’m sure you know but just checking
Also sorry just reread your post. I have no experience with trailer slack adjusters. I run a triaxle dump

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

I just did Haldex also, easy to set up. Been working good.
First time I ever did it, just watched a few YouTube videos

not a fan of the 7/16" adjuster bolts on the Haldex, they strip easy. the plastic bushings on the adjuster arms wear and break. Gunite are terrible slacks, don't keep adjustment and are also equipped with the easily stripped 7/16" adjuster bolt. only ones that we will use are Meritors. only ever had one get tight and needed to be replaced.

    your mileage may vary.

I like the Meritor and Haldex units. All auto slacks have to be set up correctly. Chambers bolts and clevis pins in the correct holes. Chamber rod the correct length.
The worst enemy to auto slacks is people adjusting them like old manual slacks and racking the gears.

that's why I like the Meritors. you have to lift the pawl button to back them off.

I changed all my truck slacks to meritor brand.
I like the ease of checking and adjusting when needed.
    Don't like gunite,
    Good luck.

Only time you ever should ratchet the Gears is when it’s time to do brakes. If you have out of adjustment outside of that with these slack adjusters, it’s becuase if worn s cam bushings or bad slack adjuster.

You know you’re showing your age. Calling Levis slacks the younger crowd is going “why’s that funny”.
